Default Stan Ceglinski is going to be at the Port Elliot Show this year (October 6th & 7th)

Just thought I'd mention that the Woodwork section of the Port Elliot Show is expanding this year.

For years I faithfully attended the Working With Wood Shows in Adelaide. They were a highlight of my annual calendar. Then in 2011 they just stopped. I've been in withdrawal ever since.

As convener of the Woodwork section of the Port Elliot Show for the past four years, I've had the ambition to re-create something of that wonderful woodwork excitement that the WWWS's used to engender. This year we are pulling out the stops.

Here's a list of attractions for October 6th and 7th this year:

Duck Flat Wooden Boats from Mt. Barker will be there this year to show you some of their wonderful creations and to talk to you about any wooden boat related issues, including kits, materials, plans, tips and tricks.

Lie Neilsen Tools will be giving talks and demonstrations of their superb range of planes and chisels. They'll be sharing all sorts of knowledge including how to set up a plane and how to keep our planes and chisels sharp.

Arbortech will be joining us, all the way from WA. They'll have a full range of their products and will be demonstrating how to get the most out of them. If the administration work doesn't prohibit me, I'm thinking about having a play with them myself. I'm getting my patterns ready for a meter long crocodile and hope to get it started during the show.

Ken Vear from SA Woodcarving Academy will be there for both days. One of SA's best carvers, Ken will be demonstrating his skills with the chisels and offering you the opportunity to learn from his vast store of carving experience.

Woodgroup SA will have two stalls this year, demonstrating spoon carving, scroll sawing and turning. There will be someone there for the full two days to talk to you and demonstrate all the various skills involved. There will also be an opportunity to join a local club if you were wanting to grow your own skills in any of these areas.

Doug Bell renowned wood artist and pyrographer, will be demonstrating this year. Doug teaches his craft all over Australia and we're very lucky to have him here. He'll also have some of his work for sale in the Wood Art Gallery (more on that below).

A professionally run 'Pop Up' Wood Art Gallery will be in operation for the two days of the show. Wood artists and instrument makers from all over the state will be exhibiting and selling their work. Its a real opportunity to acquire that unique and special gift for that unique and special person and with Christmas not that far away the timing works out pretty good too.

Carving demonstrations will be on offer from a variety of artists this year... everything from whittling to the 'big stuff' will be happening in the outdoor demo area. Come along and watch these guys and gals at work. Fair warning though... their enthusiasm is catching!

The annual Woodworking Competition is also on that weekend. Dozens of local enthusiasts have spent many hours working on their entries for this year's comp. The open categories are 'Turning', 'Carving', 'Model Making', 'Small Furniture' and 'Other' (whatever didn't fit in one of the first four categories). There is also a Young Adults category. Prizes this year are generously supplied by Carbatec and Mitre 10. There's also a 'People's Choice - Best In Show' which is chosen by the public by ballot on Saturday. The winner will be announced on Sunday and wins 8 free carving lessons from Ken Vear of SA Woodcarving Academy (see above).

And finally... Big Stan Ceglinski of WWWS fame will be there for the whole weekend. Stan is a 'force' in the Australian woodworking world. If you've ever seen Stan perform you're going to want to see him again. If you've never seen him before... you're in for a treat. Stan works with a cross cut saw, an axe, a drawknife and a froe (you may have to look that last one up). His ability to amaze, teach and entertain people of all ages is inspiring. Stan also makes his own stringed instruments and will be playing several 'sets' of bluegrass blues with local artists and even members of the public if you're brave enough. Stan will have a range of instruments and instrument kits for sale as well, so you musos might want to check this one out. Stan will also be sharing his love for Australian timber by bringing a truck load of exotic Australian hardwood timbers with him for sale. Slabs for the furniture guys, rounds and spindles for the turners, oblique cuts for the clock makers and beginner woodworkers, thin sheets for the scroll sawyers and marquetry guys. This kind of opportunity rarely happens in SA let alone locally so if you love wood you really should check out Stan's offerings.

And all of the above is only a fraction of what's going to be on at the Port Elliot Show this year

Don't forget... Port Elliot Show... October 6th and 7th... on the Port Elliot Showgrounds. Just google 'Port Elliot Show' for directions. The more people we get there the more we'll be able to offer bigger and better in the future. Come out and make it a really special weekend.

    Shouldn't this be Woodgroup SA?

Amazing when you read it, it looks OK someone else reads it and finds mistakes. We're all human.
Only reason I picked it was that I'm Vice President of Woodgroup SA.

Pity it's not the following weekend for then I would be able to attend as we're travelling to SA on the 6th and 7th.

Sounds like a great show as it has all the things that is missing from the Melbourne WWW show.

    Peter.
