Telstra 1223
Hi everyone,
This has been mentioned before I know, but maybe it is time for a reminder.
For anyone contemplating using the Sensis directory service number, 1234,
DON'T!
Sensis, as you may or may not know, is a subsidiary of Telstra. The 1234
number is replacing the Telstra 12456 directory assistance number, but this
time with outrageous costs attached: 40c to call the number, then 4c A
SECOND!
By law, Telstra have to provide a FREE directory assistance number,
because they are still majority owned by the government. They choose
however not to pass this number on to the public.
What's the number?........... 1223
Thumbs up to Telstra for finding a way to charge for a service that is
supposed to be provided for free. Of course, feel free to forward this on.
Regards
Neil.

I know, after getting stung for $10.00 for one number, a few months ago.
Still a good idea to remind a few.Stupidity kills. Absolute stupidity kills absolutely.

When this first came in Telstra announced that regrettably  this new service from Sensis was not available for Optus customers.
Am I glad that I'm with Optus and not Telstra.

Yeah I've been caught by that sensis money pit. Only once though, never again. Thanks for the alternative.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

...and it won't be getting any better when Telstra is Fully privatised! Prices will go up, and service will go down, it's guaranteed in the details of the legislation.
By that I mean where Senator Coonan has plonked all of these regulations onto the company for service guarantees in the bush. I'm not sure how you can legislate to make a private company provide a public service (at a significant loss) but they will try it anyway - all in the interests of "fair competition".
It will never work, and all of us will ultimately pay the price for this folly of fake competition.
That should stir the nativesUmmmm, what was the question?

They choose however not to pass this number on to the public.
I hate to tell you this but that statement is wrong.
After checking phone books from the last couple of years, I found that the 1223 and 12455 free numbers are listed on the same page as the 1234 number, which is reasonably clearly marked as being subject to call charges.

HiString is right, 1223 is clearly listed in the phone book as the number to call for directory assistance. The number you quote is for operator assisted calls. If you're using 1234 you have too much spare cash.
