Thread: Veritas Down Under Tour - Anyone going?

Veritas has a Youtube feed that's basically just a bunch of videos of Vic Tesolin demonstrating how their tools work, and how their tools have improved upon existing designs.

I would imagine it's going to basically be just that, especially since Vic is actually going to be doing the demo. There may be some way in which it's integrated into a small project build, but that sounds like a cumbersome way to demonstrate as many tools as possible. I would imagine there will be some dedicated time for Q&A, as well as some dedicated presentation time.

I doubt it's going to have that "shameless sales pitch" feel to it, but there may be some discounts offered or some stuff that's exclusively available? All I really know is what was mentioned in the Carbatec newsletter, so most of what I'm saying is guesswork.

I'm sure that, either way, it'll be a fun day out and there will be some like-minded folks around. I'm considering going when it's in Brisbane if I'm available to do it.

I've met Vic (at the Lee Valley factory) and he is a good guy and a knowledgable woodworker. I would imagine that the demonstrations will not be simply about the tools (worth the visit just for them) but valuable for the techniques that Vic is likely to demonstrate using them.

Before joining Lee Valley, Vic trained at the Rosewood Studio (in Canada) and ran his own studio furniture business. He knows his way around handtools.

Turned up to the Adelaide event last night and it was a no show. The whole place was locked tighter than a drum. Complete waste of time. Had to travel 1 hour each way specially. Very disappointing.

Any one go? Was I missing something?

That would be disappointing. I went to one of the shows in Melbourne and it was very informative and entertaining at the same time. It was well attended too.

John,
if that was you that walked around the building with me last night at about 6:50 you shouldn't have gone quite so quick. I rang the number for the jewellery class notice that had been stuck to the front door and the lady in question let me in, only a couple of minutes after you left (but you were out of shouting distance).

Agree the arrangements for us late comers was poor, however, once in, the night as I saw it was quite interesting and entertaining. I'm not sure Vic from Veritas covered a lot of things which aren't readily learnable from other sources, but he did cover a lot of basic stuff in a reasonably short time. I was glad to know that a lot of the stuff I have self taught myself about woodwork over the years is on the right track at least (and he confirmed my opinions on diamond stones for sharpening!)

As for the sharpening I read a very informative article on sharpening from 2002 which included micro graphs and tests post sharpening.

It appears that at the time the best finish was obtained from using Norton water stones (Shapton was not tested but I suspect that the result may be similar) with stropping using diamond paste on leather. One of the poorer finishes was with natural stones. Interesting.

the comparative performance of any particular stone is fairly dependent on the steel being sharpened
