New Lens for Xmas
A few weeks ago my BIL mentioned that he had a lens he wanted to give me because he didn't use it all that often. Yesterday he remembered to give it to me during the Christmas get-together. It's a Canon 12-22 wide angle lens, this one:
Canon 10-22mm
I was shocked to discover that these cost close to $1000 AUD. Now I feel guilty, and don't feel right about accepting it. It's basically as new unused. What'da ya do?

Nice Christmas present though Ross and very generous of your BIL
Are you able to make something in timber for him or, has he expressed any interest in something you may have or could make?
Maybe approach him and tell him how much you appreciate what he has given you but you had not realised the value until now and (if you are able) is there something you could make for him to try and offset the cost.
It is a sort of suck it and see situation.
Don't know if I have helped at all but good luck.
Colin.

He didn't want it, realised you could make use of it, gave it to you.
He would have thought about it before he gave it to you, so accept it with grace. Maybe sometime you can do something nice for him in return. But don't try to pay for a gift.

He knew the value of the lens when he gave it to you so maybe you could do an album of things he likes or do a family shoot for him, you know something photographic.
Cheers Fred
