    Default Domestic Travel Insurance

Quick question......Can anyone recommend an Insurance company for domestic travel insurance.

We travel to Tasmania each year and have never looked into it for cover of the Rental Car accident excess. Last year a couple of our friends had bingles with the wildlife and were up for big dollars. We have never taken out the excessive additional cost through the car rental company and touch wood, never had an accident.

I have explored some quotes from $65 for $5000 excess cover up to $140 for $2000 excess cover.

Have looked for the hidden clauses in the PDSs of the ones I have perused but am seeking recommendations from people with personal experience.

    Cheers

    Scott

I can't recommend one, but i can definitely tell you never get a travel insurance policy of any kind that is underwritten by Allianz.

On our honeymoon, the wife had her handbag stolen in Vegas from under her feet.. the Casino had the incident on camera, the lady that stole it was caught, charged and convicted, and they still didn't pay out the claim because "it was able to be taken without our knowledge"... Ombudsman took the side of the insurer too the a-holes.

I've heard good things about Covermore. Haven't had to claim anything through them, but friends have claimed things that were stolen from them and they've said they had no issues... not sure about car accidents though...

I have have various travel insurances. Got to the point where we considered getting permanent annual cover in fact.

However I have never had to make a claim so I can't recommend any of them. As far as I'm concerned, it's only when you make a claim that you find out if the policy and the company were any good.

Hi Scott, Check out the reviews for the different insurers. I find reviews a good guide for what's happening . The unhappy customers are the ones that will definitely write a review and quite a few happy customers will also.

If you paid for your travel with a qualifying bank credit or debit card you may be eligible for cover under their travel policy. E.G. NAB Platinum cards. That policy covers domestic rental vehicle excess up to $1250. Overseas vehicle rental excess cover is $5000.

    Thanks Fuzzie,

I have had NAB Platinum before and now I have Platinum with a different one when I changed Banks, but I found that the Insurances attached to both those cards are only for International Travel

Never had travel insurance for domestic travel but always used Covermore for overseas travel as they seem to be best for pre-existing conditions. Fortunately never had to claim

Dibbers...you might be right about staying away from Allianz.

Quote from them was $62.....most of the others I see are $120 - $140. They may offer cheaper deals due to having more loopholes in the policy.

Just a thought. The cost of the ferry would be far less than any travel insurance, and your comprehensive( if have) would be far better than any 'travel insurance'. And a bonus travel story. Long Trip from brissy but possible.

We use Covermore for all domestic business travel, never had any problems dealing with them (including claims).

We didn't get our policy direct from them, went through Virgin Travel Insurance but they were the underwriter... horror experience though... lucky it was just a handbag... I shudder to think what it would have been like if one of us ended up in hospital... "Unfortunately, you put yourself in a position where you were able to get sick, you should have travelled in a bubble... sorry we can't pay out your claim..."

Absolutely horrid customer service too... from them and the Ombudsman...

    shanesmith80,

We go every year to Cradle Mountain with about 20 friends and a lot of them are from Melbourne.

They take the ferry and I do the logistics each year and it doesn't add up for Brisbane people.

The ferry is not cheap even if you get a special deal but when we also add cost of fuel, 2 days travel, accommodation, meals both ways it actually works out far cheaper for us to fly to Launceston or Hobart and hire a car for 10 days.

I think Covermore is looking a better option...quote from them was approx $140 for the 12 days we are in Tassie.

Have you asked your regular motor vehicle comprehensive insurer?
Given that your own car will be sitting in your garage in Brisbane, the risk of crashing a hire car for 10 days may be covered by a small additional premium.
me thinks it would be worth a phone call
    regards from Alberta, Canada

    ian,

I have checked out the insurer of both my cars for travel insurance but they only cover International travel.....must leave and re-enter Australia.

I am afraid they count Tassie as still part of Oz.....
