Default Prague - hints and tips for tourists

We will be having a few days in Prague around the end of June16.
Recently saw an 'expose' regarding the scam city!
Obviously we will not be going around looking for dingy bars. drugs etc.
But was amazed by the blatant taxi rip offs.
We will be arriving by train into Prague and going to accommodation in the city.

Any tips/hints to avoid the rip offs???

    Greatly appreciated.

    Lyle.

For taxi fare rip-offs, try contacting the hotel you will be staying at and ask them what the taxi fare should be from your point of arrival to the hotel. Armed with this information, add about 10% and ask the competing taxi drivers if they will take you to the hotel for that amount or less. This should avoid being given the long tour of the Number 5 Truck Factory on the way.

Luggage: Try to keep someone in the taxi with the fare in hand until ALL luggage has been loaded/unloaded. This should avoid having the taxi drive off with sundry pieces of luggage in the back seat/boot. Also consider asking the driver to help get all the luggage in/out. Keep a spare luggage strap on hand and loop it through all the handles of your luggage, then keep it fastened as you load/unload items of baggage - this should stop runners from scooping up a case and taking off (if you chase him/her, then their confederates with grab whatever you left on the footpath).

Wallets, credit cards etc. Get one of the 'anti-scan' wallets and keep all your 'smart' cards inside. Make several copies of all the details of your cards and keep them in different places in your luggage. Consider getting some of the fixed value cards such as are sold by Australia Post and keep them separate from your main cards - only carry one at a time.

Pickpockets are everywhere in Europe, not just the old Warsaw Pact areas, they tend to frequent anywhere there are crowds such as busses, trains, airports - try to keep your wallet in a buttoned pocket or get a 'biker' wallet with a chain and clip to your belt. I have found some brands of pants sold as travel/adventure wear have zippered inside pockets and loops for attaching a safety chain/cord. You may want to carry two wallets, one obvious and easily accessible and one hidden - if mugged just give them the wallet with a bunch of receipts and low value notes, fake cards etc. keeping the 'real' wallet in another pocket. Its not worth injury or death over a few dollars, give them whatever they want and quickly. Don't hang onto hand bags etc. that are grabbed by the occupants of passing vehicles.

Be aware that some hotels will put a 'stop' on your card for imaginary services such as deluxe laundry, total contents of a mini-bar etc. in case you might use them and then take months to cancel it - it doesn't appear as a disputable charge but it does count against your cards credit limit. Discuss this with hotel staff before providing a credit card - another reason for getting a 'fixed value' Visa tourist card.

    Just a few ideas.
