Default Abbott and Ashby VS Linishall

    Looking at upgrading my grinder.
At the moment it is a bit of a toss up between an Abbott and Ashby ATB G600/8 and a Linishall BG8.
Paramount is that the wheels turn truly.
Really only using the grinder for sharpening chisels, not fettling big castings etc. However I sharpen chisels lots and lots every day while working (turning).
Anyone got either of these grinders and care to comment upon the satisfaction or otherwise of them?.
    Thanks in advance.

I’ve got the Abbott and Ashby and it’s great. Smooth as satin - barely a ripple in the water trough.

Not sure if mine are exactly the same, I’ve got an 8” Abbott and Ashby industrial one that I’ve have for probably 25 or 30yrs and it has been used in an industrial situation for about 15 of those yrs and it’s still going strong.

Also have the 8” utility one set just for my Woodturning setup and it’s ok and no where as smooth as my other one, will be swapping them over when I get around to it.

Can’t comment on the Linishall as I’ve never used one.
    Cheers

I just bought a Linishall 8' & a white wheel for sharpening chisels. I would not buy again. The grey wheels that come on the grinder are rubbish . They were out of round & also not running true. Checked the grinder wheel shafts with dial indicator and they were both near perfect (.0005") . The wheel flange plates are pressed 3mm , so machined up new plates and fitted the Arborflex brand white wheel. All good. The reason for buying Linishall was that there was no Abbot & Ashby at Tradetools, Bunnings or any hardwares in the area. A couple of years ago , before I retired I bought an Abbot & Ashby 8" for sharpening stump grinder cutting bits which are tungsten tipped (fitted green wheels) . That grinder would be working for 2 hours at a time no problems. That's my experience , that's all I can tell you. pker

I am fully expecting the wheels on either grinder to be rubbish so that's no biggie.
pker, do you think the new white wheels you fitted would have fixed the problem even without making new flange plates?.
I like the fact that the Linishall's are still made in Australia. They also look to have a sturdier cast tool rest on them than the A&A's, plus a light and dressing wheel.

Watching with interest as I'm also looking for a new bench grinder, and had no clue as to what was good or not - thanks for posting this thread!

    What is a good wheel?
Just went and bought a A&A from totaltools (G600/8).
I have a WS3000, but needed something a bit stronger.

I thought that they were made in NZ?

What are you using it for?

If it’s mainly for sharpening and shaping chisels, plane blades etc then a CBN wheel
    Cheers

Is it okay to fit one CBN wheel only, and a standard white or grey wheel on the other end of the grinder?
I was wondering about balance etc.

    Regards

Yes, both of my grinders are running different types on each end.

One has had a multi tools sander and a wire wheel, whilst the other has a CBN and a blue wheel that is just about to replaced with a CBN wheel as it has worn down.

As long as whatever is on the shaft, is balanced and trued, you can run whatever on either end.

The balance you have to be concerned about on a grinder wheel is the circumference balance, like a car tyre/wheel. Side to side doesn't matter at all. So you can put a wire wheel one side, and a chunky CBN at the other no problem.

Exactly what I will be using it for.
    Next question.
Which CBN wheel? Mr Google has more than one in his books.

From memory the original wheels were still crap with the machined flanges & I just fitted the white wheel & all ok. I never tried the pressed flanges with the white wheel. I will try that later today for you. Also they are manufactured in China (see attached) . I think it is just the linishing attachment that is made in New Zealand. pkerDSCF0066[1].jpg
