Default Can I use the Charlesowrth "Ruler Trick" on my BU blades?

    Hello all,

I have been doing a search and failed to locate any direct answer to this question. If it has been covered I would appreciate a reference.

I have the LN BU smoother and the 60 1/2 block plane. I have been using the Chralesworth ruler trick on my bevel down blades with some success, and for consistency I would like to use the same technique on the BU blades.

Will I be creating a blade that would then work like a micro-scraper if I put a back bevel on a BU blade?

    All responses appreciated.

    Anthony

    Hi Anthony

You can use the Ruler Trick confidently as the backbevel angle is less than one degree. It will not affect the cutting angle or the clearance.

I choose not to do so on my blades simply because the backs come flat and I strop them (freehand) as I work - this keeps the blades usably sharp for longer. If you add a micro back bevel, then stropping is not practical and you need to sharpen more frequently (and do it completely).

It is just up to the way you prefer to work/sharpen.

Default Thanks for the response Derek

    Derek,

That was quick, thank you for the response.

Life is one big trade off, isn't it? I have a strop but must admit to having had mixed resluts with it. I suspect it rolls the edge and therefore blunts the blade. I am sure that is operator error.

I will try both methods and determine which works best for me.

    Thanks again,

    Anthony
