Saw files
Can anyone provide me advice on where you get your saw files from? My intent is to practice my sharpening on some cheap old saws I have before stepping into the world of creating something myself.

Hello
I take it you have a saw set and vice as well. If you don't have a saw vice you can make one out of timber and then clamp that into your normal vice. A saw set is essential unless you want to do it the old way and set the teeth with a hammer.
In addition to the taper files you'll need a mill file to joint the teeth. Ebay US has some good file sellers on there, I prefer Nicholson files that were made in the USA.
This link should give some good advice.

Hi Lizard
Liogier (France) has a very good range. I have just sent a couple to a member for assessment. Then we are going to experiment with getting a couple of them coated to increase edge hardness. From there we'll be going to a Group Buy (the Rasps GB is currently underway).
Before you ask - they are not shown on the website. Liogier also does Milled Files, and I've just received a pricelist for their Engineer's Files - there's about 240 of them!

Thank you all, I'm in the throws of making a saw vise. Once I get a couple of files it will be onto the practice blades

Hello
You can buy them from bunnings in the tool department, just look for files.
Nicholson taper files are good ones, a 10 point saw needs a smaller file than a six pointer.
Cheers

I've been using some Liogier files of various types just recently (Engineer's, Saw, Needle) and found them to be excellent. I had some Sapphire coated but haven't assessed the viability of that as yet.
One of the Saw files is 100x5mm Triangular tapered (Extra Slim) and it's a little beauty! I've been using it to de-burr the inside edges of T-Track after cutting.
