Hand cranked Grinders and Tormek style tool rest?
Ok so I am looking at building a new sharpening set up and I am wanting a powerless set up. I am looking at buying a Vintage hand cranked grinder and refitting a Tormek blade jig to aid in the whole one handed grinding process. As this would give me much more control over the squareness of the grind as well as the speed of the wheel.
Has any one done this Before?

What about a pedal system so you can sit and use both hands.

Yes, I have done what you are considering and it worked a treat. The Tormek blade jig allows good control for one handed use with just a little practice.
I have since added to my setup with a powered grinder next to the hand cranked grinder, and a bar the same diameter as the Tormek bar, in front of both. They are positioned so that I can move from one to the other without changing the blade/jig arrangement. The hand cranked grinder can be moved independently so that both grinders give exactly the same angle at the bevel tip. Because the wheel diameter of the hand cranked grinder is smaller it effectively gives a "microgrind" at the tip of the blade. This happens quickly, efficiently and stays cool. Most visits to the grinding station just entail a quick touch up with the hand cranker.
The other enhancement I have done, is to fashion a blade holder from an electronics heat sink. This dissapates heat remarkable well and I'm able to grind quite quickly on the 8" high speed (2,800rpm) bench grinder while maintaining a cool blade.
Some pictures follow.

Hi Mark,
Thats a great looking set up I love how you have mounted the tool rest so it drops down for other grinding operation. I will may steel this Idea when I am building my new set up.
Thanks for all the images too its so nice to see that I am not the only one with this crazy idea.

I'd give it a try as it is first. I managed to grind all mine straight on the original guide. I free hand sharpen so the grinder really only got used to do the original restoration of the edges. With all things hand tools it is a balance between using guides and training muscle memory etc.
