I'm with you RV, I am not all that fussed with leather any more and prefer neatly dressed pine. I have one stick that I keep a little greasy (a tiny drop of oil) as I find it cuts more aggressively. The other I keep dry. I can't say I have found the Veritas green to be overly greasy. I do like cardboard (cereal box style) strops as well.

Put the stick in hot water? I have never done it but the theory seems OK.
