I did try sharpening one time with a round chainsaw file. Took ages and only a so so result. Then I watched this guy's video.

This works really well and no BS when he says it is sharper than when new. When I started on this method I figured one sharpen will double the life of a blade but some of mine are going fine with the third touch up. The set gets reduced a bit with each sharpen so you cant do this forever but I get 3 times the life from a blade. A light touch is the go. Just enough to reestablish the point of the tooth. I got the hang of it quite soon.

John

I use those little cylinder type grinding stones from my local Stihl dealer of appropriate size in my dremmel on my larger blades >3/4" wide. The others I cover the joint in candle wax then soak in cheap cleaning vinegar for 24hrs. Afterwards I clean the blade in soaping water and remove wax, dry, then like all my blades coat in Dryglide spray hard teflon.

I use a cheap diamond wheel in my Dremel. Just stroke the back of the tooth ...
I have used this method for a number of years very successfully. I purchased a few new blades from Henry Brothers a little while ago. Apparently my last order was 2009 - so the 3 blades I had from them lasted 7 years.

In the Brisbane area, you can get a standard bandsaw blade professionally sharpened for about $10 and TCT one done for around $22. Not bad if you own more expensive type blades.

A small diamond coated disc in a cordless drill does the job too.
I laid in a bimetal blade to make DIY sharpening worth it. The blade has been going for years.Cheers, Ern

thanks for the replies I have decided to go with diamond disk in dremel i have in the past used the chain saw grinding stones but with bi metal blades it doesn't last all that long so it worried me that i wouldn't get a consistent grind.

I also use the "Dremel with a grinding disk approach" to sharpen my bandsaw blades while they are still on the bandsaw.
The extra hint I can pass on is to sit on a barstool while doing this - it avoids the sore back that I was getting standing bent over for the 15+ minutes it took to sharpen the blade.New Zealand
