Lansky makes a little, stripped-down field version. I see the concept as a jig which allows you to
reproduce a known bevel angle, time after time. I was taught free-hand many years ago.
Serves me well.

Ha ha, I was salivating watching it first time i saw it. Mentally trying to figure out how to convince SWMBO that we REALLY needed one.
Pretty awesome but my $24 Chinese version works well on the knives - sigh!

Wow, looking at the price of the Aussie version, $240 without any stones or guides. I reckon that Russian beauty might be a the deal if you were REALLY serious about one

I have a Lansky. Works great. There are quite a few different sharpeners the same style out there. I researched them when I bought the Lansky. Plenty of clones from China.
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I confess that I drifted away from water stones to 3M W&D sandpapers some years ago.
Just seemed so easy to tune up my wood carving gouges.
Then it just seemed so easy to tune up my crooked knives and carving adzes.
Then it just seemed so easy to tune up my good Porche kitchen knives and cleavers.
I still have the Lansky, somewhere. Not in my day-to-day hunting kit.
It's a really clever little jig to keep constant bevel angles.

Wish I had one I bought the cheap Chinese $24 kit for my knives, works OK. Then last Christmas my wife was looking at all sorts of junk to buy the kids for Christmas. # 2 son on the list, and i piped in with 'he could use a GOOD sharpening system for those nice knives we already bought.' Showed her the Lansky system on the PC and she approved. bought it and gave it at Xmas last. He was over the other night for dinner and I asked him if he liked it - STILL hasn't used it

I have to admit Dave, I didn't watch that video as I'm not a fan of Mr Wranglerstar. But I thought I should have a look so I watched it. That is a very nice sharpening jig. Well thought out and very well made. A bit overkill for my pocket knives but still very nice.

Hey Dave, I'm hoping he'll re-gift to me
And as for Mr. Wranglerstar, same here. when i started exploring Youtube I found him and quite liked the few woodworking episodes he was doing, jsut playing with restored tools, making stuff, etc.
Now? Well, lots of whining, lots of long windbaggery. That was the only clip of his I've watched for months.
(Still lusting over that Russian beauty though )

Dave
Thanks for posting the video. I have only just seen the post. A bit slow on the uptake. I was most appropriate for me as I am just in the process of making a copy of a Japanese grafting knife.
I am a big believer in using sharpening jigs and do so for my plane blades and chisels. Having said that (IanW will know what is coming now ) I never use a jig for sharpening knives.
I was impressed with the workmanship in that jig. It is beautifully made. Every part is right on the money. The video itself was a little annoying with the presenter rambling on.
I was quite happy to watch the initial demonstration of the component parts, but after a while I was egging him to move on. Finally I got the sh^^s with him and started clicking ahead to see where he was actually sharpening something. I must have missed the two second segment that depicted this as suddenly (because I was jumping ahead) he was doing a rather poor demonstration of cutting paper.
In that regard I have been spoiled by the demonstrations of Japanese kitchen knives slicing effortlessly through rolled up newspaper as if they were fairy floss.
I don't think I will be parting with any hard earned for this Russian toy. I did go searching for the Lansky device that NCArcher mentioned but could only find the standard kitchen type monstrosities that you see advertised on TV. Perhaps Tony or somebody else could post a link.

Ramblestar does go on a bit. Oh is that wranglestar. I did happen to see that 2 second segment you missed. I should have put the time down so everyone could scroll right to it.
I reckon a man of your calibre could almost make one. Some linear brarings. Round pipe / rod and a few clamps
