stones ID plese
Hello esteemed members, I brought a box full of different sharpening stones - some crappy some good, would anyone have any idea of the following, I'll try to give a description of the smoothness etc.
I do know the names of 2 of them but the others no idea.
1. Very smooth say a fine grit? tried to flatten out the stains gave up as l had a few to get through.

2. One side is really fine the other medium, fine side looks a bit like a washita?

3. Very fine, i reckon its a natural stone, the glittery bits in the stone could be from the diamond lapping stone, not happy about loose coarse diamond grit in fine stones.

4. The photo on the left has a narrow "diamond inside a circle" if that helps - look hard it's there, the stone is 50mm thick and quite smooth one side, say a medium grit.

5. I was told this is "black" novoculite (spelling?) very fine, must have been used for razors etc

6. A washita - this is the one i asked about ages ago (W8) stands for washita 8" long, seems very smooth - perhaps fine grit?

7. Red uncleaned stone, quite fine and soft.

There were several other stones but mainly grey combo stones plus another "black" novoculite and some small pocket sized stones, so anyone can help or even have a guess, plus what are the best etc, that large thick stone with the "diamond inside a circle" has me intrigued, it resembles a quartz'y like granite? for want of a better description
Regards
Stevo

The Stones.
Hi Stevo,
Had a very experienced Carpenter Ret.who showed how to flatten a stone. Not rocket science. He had a piece of ½in. iron, but said glass wood do, very fine sand & some water. put down some sand, bit of water, & within 2mins. the stone was completely flat, just by going up & down one way.Regards,
issatree.
