Default Tormek Diamond Wheels & New Tool Mount

Tormek are releasing three new Diamond wheels for the Tormek T-8, and a new tool rest that allows honing of the tool on the side of the wheel as opposed to the top - in this way, the honed surface is perfectly flat as opposed to ever so slightly concave by the shape of the wheel.

This video covers these in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SRAa8MA-Nr0

More information can be found here: https://www.tormek.com/international...nd-multi-base/

I haven't yet seen these for sale in Australia (they literally have announced this only a couple of days ago). Will be interesting to see the prices on these wheels!

Looks like June availability from the website, probably a bit later for us here. Interested in the multi base!

I'll be interested to find out if the diamonds hold up over a reasonable amount of use once people have some time with them; my limited experience with diamond plates isn't very positive from a longevity perspective.

    Cheers,

I've been running CBN on my Torment for the past 4 years or so. It works well with the HSS turning tools. Very rarely will I put a Plane blade or Bench chisel near the Torment. If I completly ruin an edge, then maybe a visit to the A&A grinder, with #80 cbn, then either Waterstones or Diamond hones.

Diamond would be handy with WC tools, but I only have 1 and hand hone it.

It will be interesting to see the price comparison between the Normal wheel, the Japanese wheel and the Woodcut CBN.

Thant's what I was going to say.

I already have a diamond wheel on my Tormek with a diamond face plate on the outside. I use them for my TCT tools including a TC bowl gouge. Using the Tormek means the diamond is continuously washed so stays lubricated and clean and lasts longer. Like all wheels though, it will not last forever

That only holds for high speed grinders, since these create enough heat to cause the carbon in diamonds to migrate to the steel. Slow speed and water cooled grinders, such as the Tormek, are perfectly safe with diamond. CBN does not contain carbon, which is why it is preferred for high speed grinding.

Yes. That is their strength compared with diamond. CBN is not as hard as diamond, but is hard enough not to wear with any steel type. Hence is the choice of turners grinding HSS at full speed.

According to a post on Instagram, the Tormek diamond wheels will be priced similarly to the Japanese Waterstone wheel.

Interesting, which would put them (if I recall correctly) around the high $400's mark here.

Will be interesting to see what these come out at here - and when. There is (or seems to be) a lag time before we get stuff like this

It's been awhile since this thread was last posted. Has anybody managed to lay their hands on one of these Tormek diamond stones? I'm particularly intersted in their abilities to flaten the back of chisels and plane irons

You can get them from Carbatec. I haven't heard of anybody using them though. $545 each and $585 for the coarse one. A bit expensive to have a play with. Plus $149 for the tool mount thingy
Those were the droids I was looking for.

I know they are not cheap. I already have a Woodcut CBN wheel, so it's a bit hard to justify layout that amount of money without first knowing more. Their ability to provide a honing/shaping surface on their side is unusual. I'm curious to know if anybody has used them.
