using a beer bottle
Had a mate around yesterday for a meal and of course a drink or three, well as we were preparing the tucker we found out that the knives were a tad blunt so I started to sharpen them on those tools that you can pick up at fishing and camping stores. My friend said hold on a minute don't use those they take off too much steel, he then asked if I'd pass him the beer bottle then he started to hone the knife on the side of the bottle, after a couple of minutes he passed me the knife and said now try that. A very sharp knife was put to good use. A very effective and best of all cheap way of honing.

Hi huon,
Yes the old beer or glass bottles is great way to sharpen knives and scissors. The scissors are sharpen on the neck of the bottle where the cap screws on.
You hold the scissors on angle so the edges of scissors runs on the neck. You use the same action like when you cut paper but drag the scissors back as you do it. My mother use to do this when I was a kid growing up in the bush. I still use the bottle sharpen knives and scissors today. Give the scissors ago.
Graham.

Two thumbs up fellas! Never herd of this method before... I know about the unglazed ceramic rim on the bottom of bowls, cups etc but not straight on glass.
Is it more like drawing up a little of the steel into an edge ( similar to a card scraper) or is it like a butchers steel where it straightens up the wire?
Does anyone here have any technical info on this?
I'm going to give this a go!
Thanks for sharing guys!

Yep, I think home brew bottles are more satisfying. On a more serious note my friend did ask for a steel at first, couldn't find it. I'll ask him about the effect on the edge when I speak to him.
