    Default West Stone Machine

    Hi,

Our Men Shed has decided to purchase a wet stone including some attachments. Attachments would be for doing chisels and maybe drill bits.

This was discussed and not everyone will have access to this item as im sure it can cause issue with the stone in inexperienced hands.
All that said, which one to buy.

Sheppach 250 was one we were looking at, however Total Tools shows it as obsolete on their computer. I assume that's because they now have there own brand. I believe its a Detroit and I cannot remember the other brand they had. Never heard of it either.

There seems to be a few other available such as Sherwood, Robert Sorby, Tiger 2500, Record and metal tech. I'm sure there are many more that could be included Tormek T4 and the T8. The tiger 2500 looks like a rebadged Sheppach.

So what are peoples opinions on brands and their recommendations. First hand knowledge would be very welcome as well.

    Brian

If I were to purchase a wet stone grinder it would be a Tormek hands down I do not own one but several people I know do, all the other brands are a copy, and are built to copy specifications

No issues with the Tormek T8 I bought from CWS. i can’t speak for the copies.
The price including a few attachments is a bit eye watering, and i also set up an 8” spark grinder with the same toolrest setup- very worthwhile when you need to do preliminary shaping as the wetstone is not for shaping- waay too slow.
As with any system there is a bit to learn so you want to get a few people trained up in how to get the best results from the machine

I have the Record Power. It is great. If the Tormek is any better it must be absolutely fantastic.

The other good point for Tormek is that you can always buy spare parts, my friend in WA just purchased parts for his and it is 30 years old

Hi, I agree with the point made about the bench grinder, I was under no illusion the wet stone machine would be used to shape a chisel etc.

While price is always at the forefront of most peoples purchasing of new equipment, for me its not, as there are other consideration that need to be in the mix.

    Price (delivered to Darwin)
    Quality of the gear
    Ease of use
    Warranty
    Available accessories
    Cost of accessories
Availability of spare parts in the long term
    Service agent
    Machine reviews (reliable reviews)
First hand experience from others with a particular brand / item.

These are some of the consideration that also form part of the decision making process. If it was me, and I was purchasing for myself I would have the Tormek T8 with a couple of the accessories already in my workshop. However this is for our man shed and the needs of others must be considered.

Once again fun and games in purchasing a tool for the Men shed .
