    Default Air trimmer

For when you have too much air and need to trim some off

But seriously, we picked up an Oben RL1 1/4" trimmer at an auction recently and I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on it

Not even Google has heard of it.

Works beautifully, I'm not sure how fast it spins but it's much slower than the 30k rpm of electric trimmers which means that you don't get burn marks even if you try to (I did). The only downside it that it uses a LOT of air, so it's fine for shorts bursts of use but our compressor had to work overtime to keep up after about a minute.

What's your free air delivery rate on your compressor?

The pump is rated at 28.8 cfm. We regulate to 120psi and the fitting has a 7.5mm orifice, not sure what that comes to in terms of actual delivery

We used to have 2 of these (1 set for straight cut the other for bevel)back in the eighties ran both constantly in the shop never had a problem with air supply from an old 30cfm compressor. We did a lot more laminating in the shop in those days before all post form tops.

I think I worked out the problem with air supply; the main line is approx 1 1/4" gal pipe and slowly reduces through the system as you get to the individual hose reels, but when the big air dryer was added to the system (after the initial setup but before I started working there) some genius decided to do it with piddly 1/2" pipe so there's a massive restriction bolted directly to the compressor outlet...

The boss has been alerted to this and is in favour of fixing it, might need a bigger in-line oil filter as well so we're going to get the experts out. Hopefully this means we can use high-flow tools with the CNC running, because we have an air grinder that can take out air faster than it can be put back in and the CNC shuts down if the pressure drops too low.

Surely the person who plumbed the drier had no idea what they were doing Be like tying a knot in your hose and trying to water the garden.

Glad to hear you found a problem with the set up because a 28cfm compressor should be able to give all you need for the workshop.

Turns out the problem is actually the compressor: there's not enough of it.

According to engineeringtoolbox.com, 1/2" pipe can handle some 60-70 scfm at 120psi, so it's not a bottleneck and the air sander we have needs 20cfm on its own. Looks like we're in the market for a new screw compressor.

I had a few problems with air tools after I installed new hose reels so we decided to investigate and pulled the reels apart to see what was what. The reels had 3/8" hose on them but the inlet side only had 1/4'' fittings and that was killing the air flow. We made new 3/8'' fittings and the air tools had a new lease on life. Why would they do that I will never be able to work out and I still shake my head when I think about it.
