Can I ask what went wrong with the sander? I ask because I have one and it has coped with many meters of redgum and merbau without any dramas. I've bought a few 18V cordless tools and the corded ROS and not had a problem with any of them either. Did the magic smoke escape or something mechanical choose to no longer be a team player?

The 3 + 3 yr extended warranty was one of the reasons I decided to give the thing a go. Sounds like a good deal in theory.

What went wrong with it ??

First pass, it was warmer than one would expect,
    second pass, it was hot,
third pass, it was hopping around like an old landcruiser on the gibb river road
fourth pass, I was looking for the welding gloves to be able to hold onto it.

Much the same as this story .... AEG belt sander HBS1000e

... and quite a few overseas comments about the Ridgid branded equivalent ... which interestingly, seems to have been discontinued in preference for a different unit.

    Magic Smoke ..

Nahhh ... Ive had a couple of vacuum cleaners, that the same parent company sells using brand names they have purchased ... so I was able to recognise the symptoms and prevent the magic smoke escaping from the sander,

... by switching it off and leaving it on a piece of corro, to cool down.

Hi all well I just had to comment on this thread ,I bought a Makita belt sander when I was an apprentice to noah ,now this thing has been all over Australia with me sat unused in open boxes for a couple of years has been used in a professional joinery and now resides in my shed .In all that time it has never let me down and still used now in fact yesterday pulled out new belt on and away we go .Someone mentioned maktec tools well I bought a trimmer as it was needed due to company tools being used and abused by others and also there age ,anyway I was so impressed by this little trimmer and the price I bought one for home use as well all my tools apart from my plane isor are Makita or maktec I will not buy any other my cordless drills have outlasted hitachi ones which I have seen fall to pieces so if you ask me I will say spend that bit more and buy Makita and if it is for home use buy a maktec and save some money .
