Where can I buy good tools.
Hi,
Looking at getting started and would like to know where are good places to purchase tools. I am new to woodwork and have no previous experience. I live in Wollongong and have not been able to find any clubs etc to assist me. I am able to get to wider Sydney region to purchase.
Thanks

Working with wood show at Sydney would be a good place to have a look at.
From memory, just after working with wood show there was a second hand tool flea market at Burwood high school. I've bought some very good tools from this at reasonable to bargain prices. Don't know if they still hold this market.

Skygazer,
If you have an idea of what you are likely to make, and post it here, there are some very knowledgeable Forum members who could advise you.
Have you thought of doing a (short) course in WW. It's amazing when you surround yourself with those in the know and admit you know little, how helpful others can be.

Hi Carry,
thanks for the reply. I would like to do a short course but am having problems finding one in my area (Wollongong). I have had someone recommend a course in Mittagong (http://www.sturt.nsw.edu.au/course_term.htm#wood) which seems to be exactly what I want. Its a bit far away but may be my only option. I am interested in building household furniture.

Hmmm... OK, this won't exactly answer your question but go to Carbatec's web-site, pick your store, scroll down the LH side to find "catalogues," then fill out the form to get one sent to you gratis.
Another free cattle-dog worth getting, IMHO, is Hare & Forbes.
These'll give you a good idea of what types of tools are out there and an approximation of their price ranges. (It'll also give you something to casually leave lying around the house, full of bookmarked pages, in the lead up to Christmas. ) You'll find that many members of these forums shop at one or t'other (or both), although wood-shows are probably the cheapest way to buy the major machinery or better quality hand-tools.
You can start (and many do) with cheap equipment bought from Bunnings, Mitre10 or similar... but if you're serious about your woodwork you will end up looking for better quality tools.

Express tools in Orangegrove Road, Unanderra are the only local supplier of any merit. They have a nice selection of stuff but I have never compared their prices.
