About 250m east along Riversdale Rd from Camberwell junction. Up a side st, (Station St???). Go there on a Sunday morning, you can't miss it. It was pretty good about 20 years ago...not so sure now. (haven't been for a while)

Hi - I like to drop in to the Camberwell Market when I can. While it is not the best tool market their are two guys who have stall their who are members of the HTPAA Old Tools group in Melbourne.
I have found some very nice find like an 18th Century Sheffield Rip saw, by very collectable smith for $10, it is worth over $100 I am told. However, I think their are few bargain to be found. Rich area, lots of home renovation types looking for a nice display tool. For example titan chisels go for no less then $10 -$15 with a handle. Price.
However it can be worth it at times.
I have found the German/Austrian guy at the Laverton Trash and Treasure market, much better value.
Here are the details for the market:

You won't find any tools at this market...just meat and vegies. The trash and treasure market is run by the lions club, and is only on Sundays, and is in the carpark behind Burke Rd.

As my favourite source for tools at the present, I will share what I know,
I go pretty much every sunday at the moment.
The trash and treasure that is.
IMHO collectable tools will go for a steepish price, though good usable /restorable tools can be had at a decent bargain.
You really do have to get there early. I know a few of the regular tool-guy-store-holders get there at sparrows-fart and go around with torches while the casuals are setting up, buy the good stuff for a steal and slap it straight into their own stores that they haven't even set up yet, at a considerable mark-up. Kind of annoying.
Sometimes you have to really bargain and haggle...
But then, I also have a couple of genuine old guys I go to every week and get some great bargains from. Prices and attitudes decent and honest enough that I will not even consider barganing/haggling. If their price is too much I move on. If I buy a few things, they offer me a discount. I like to think with the decent blokes there is some small degree of mutal respect going on. Beyond that, there are some real sharks.
Tomorrow morning, my girlfreind will have a stall there. I will drive my own car in (as she will be there too early and too late for me) and as usual, get there around 7:30, and leave by 9:30. Coffee and hot jam donut mid-way through
IMO, If you find anything to buy after 9:30, then it was hidden, or you were willing to pay more than anyone else was, or the storeholder dropped their price. Good stuff at good prices just goes early...
anyway, saying that,
I would love to know what other markets or sources melbournians recomend (if you are willing to share your secrets ). My tool collecting has only just recently started in any serious form, so I am a relative newbie to this. I am happy to travel a couple of hours out of melbourne if necessary and worthwhile.
Hans.
