That looks like a combo run and start cap

How do you know the capacitor is stuffed?

Can you spin the motor by hand?

If so spin the motor and the turn the power on - if it starts its the capacitor.

If the run cap is damaged then I wouldn't run the motor too long as it may over heat.

Those capacitance values look a tad low for start and or run capacitors. I would expect 10's of microfarad for a start capacitor at least.

They look like the values for interference suppression of a universal motor, not an induction motor.

Good point, the smallest I've seen is 7 micros but it was a very small motor.

If I only connect the power it doesn't start.

Do I have to unplug the capacitor before?

This is not my field of expertise but that looks like a "noise suppressant" capacitor to me. I had one fail on a large Metabo drill years ago. Sought advice on here, wealth of information comes back, $20 later, easy fix. I'll see if I can find the link.

If it is a noise suppressing capacitor and it has blown (open circuit) then the motor should still start, OTOH if its has shorted then the motor may not start and your circuit breaker may open.

I can't seem to go back far enough in the archives of this site yet to dig out my old thread but it was Gerhard from Holland who helped me out, remember him?

In any case, mine blew when I was using it, sparks, smoke and flames out the rear vent. I dismantled it and went around the toolshops seeking counsel, complete waste of time as no-one I spoke to had a clue. For ages it sat unused until I posted on here and Gerhard came to the rescue. From photos I posted on here he was even able to tell month and year of manufacture (1983 or similar) ffs. Off I went to Mr Metabo with a description & part number only to be told I had to go through a tool repairer, one of the ones who never had a clue. Single part ordered from said repairer and two weeks later and $20 it arrived. An easy install, no wiring, no soldering. The two long legs slid down two deep matching holes in the stator and away she went. Interestingly, the new capacitor was not much younger than the original.

Even more interesting, the drill ran without the capacitor installed, these things only suppress electronic noise. I'll bet yours is old and will have delaminated like mine did. No biggy if you go to the right places for help.
