Sorry no Melbournites have answered you. I have little knowledge of specialist shops in Melbourne but I buy Panasonic tools from Gasweld who have a shop in Dandenong according to their web site and Ideal Tools sell Festool and are based in Williamstown. A quick google should help out.

As far as whether the chinese versions work as well as the others - it depends. Some brands exercise tight QA and QC and they do and others are not. Chinese does not necessarily mean bad quality. Panasonic are made in China but the quality is top notch and they are ultra reliable.

Most lithium ion cordless drills are now made in china. The good thing about the industrial brands is that the tools are made in there own factories in china & are made to their standards.

The good thing is that brands like festool,protool,aeg,dewalt & metabo are backing there products by a 3year warranty, the dewalt also come with a 30day satisfaction guarantee...the milwaukee lithium range comes with 5years warranty now thats confidence

A Electrician I know of buys Milwaukee. He is as happy as could be with these.
On the other hand,
I have the AEG, poorer brother of the Milwaukee, & at $150 it does all I want.
2 Batteries, with the best torch I've ever had, Charger, & takes 38 mins to charge. Battery will go in either way on the drill. I bought it at the Longeronong Field Day 18 months ago.
The Elmore Field Days are on again, 6,7,8,9th ? Oct. 2009. Google Field Days.?
Or why not wait till TT&WWWShow at the Show Grounds, or is it a need it right now thing.

I did finally settle on a Panasonic (Model#EY7460LN2S) however its a 21.6V, comes with 2 Li bats and a charger from Power Tool in Carlton. Cost me $399 reduced from $699.

Power Tools are having specials at the moment, I did not opt for the 14.4V as I dont miond the weight of the 21.6V and the 14.4v cost $499 reduces from $585.

There are some great special pricing there for Makita, Milwaukee, Hitachi and more. The fellow there by the name of Ben was very helpful and friendly.

Sound like I'm advertising for them....Anyway, good price and service do deserve a mention.

The Festool CMS workbench and modules caught my eye....will need to convince the home CEO for something that pricy.

As I said in the other thread good choice.

Ben is a long time mate of mine hence why I sound like I'm advertising for them too. He's been in the powertool game since he was 18 and knows his stuff. The good thing about Powertool Specialists is they do repairs too, so can tell you what common problems each tool have and if you find a better price they will always try to better or match it.
