DeWalt Gyroscopic Screwdriver
DeWalt have an 8 volt Gyroscopic Screwdriver which seems to be a great little tool. It doesnt seem to be available outside of USA which is highly annoying to us down in NZ. All the reports on You Tube seem to be for 'unboxing' and for 'new' examples, nothing from people who have had along use with the tool as to its durability, faults ect. I know Black & Decker also have one but the DeWalt seems to be a better quality unit. Anyone got comments at all?

I've been using the Makita equivalent for a decade. Mine looks like the Makita 6723DW model.
I should have held out for one with a real chuck. Mine has a magnetic socket that can't retract a bit or a drill in service.
I like the elbow, the light and the reverse features. Many tip bits to pick from.
No quick change batteries, no way to estimate charge. One spare, please? Just to finish the job?
Despite a few flaws, I keep it upstairs in my study, not down in the shop.

Thanks for your quick response Robson Valley .... All those points you raise would seem to be eliminated with the DeWalt version. I did buy one of the Black & Decker versions but having opened it up, charged it then started using it quickly came across the fact it wouldnt hold the bit in the magnetic chuck. Pretty useless really and it has sat in the "Not used Drawer" ever since. The DeWalt seems to have a quick release chuck that a bit clicks into and is retained. I like the DeWalt system of showing how much battery is left and having a second battery .... as you say "One spare, please? Just to finish the job?"

HA! That's enough news in reverse to ask Santa to bring me a DeWalt for Christmas (if not sooner.)
The magnetic chuck may be a weight-saver but it doesn't work worth a dam*

Where does the "gyroscopic" come into it...?

I presume it has a rotating wheel that acts as a gyroscope. The wheel axle is probably connected to a switch of some kind so when its twisted left or right the resulting torque shifts the wheel's axle and triggers the switch.
Personally I'll think I'll wait for the Sonic Screwdriver.

If you can't find it locally, I would just buy it from the US. A low cost voltage step-down voltage converter for the charger from eBay and you're on your way.
I've done exactly this for other rechargeable tools that are far cheaper in the USA than here in AU. I was ahead on the first purchase.
