differance scms or table saw
Hi All
I have been reading about scms and i like the makita 1013 or hitachi models and was wondering what do they do that a table saw cant do
i have a table saw and have room for a scms
I want to build a work bench against the back wall using a pine frame and 7 ply sheets for the top back and sides
if i bought a scms(second hand of ebay)use it for the frame and my circular saw for the ply
even though i could get a new ryobi or ozito i like good stuff and a second hand mak or hitachi is a good option in my books
thanks in advance

I was going to ask the same question. I have a table saw and have made a great crosscut sled.
I also have a Makita Mitre saw (not sliding) but have been thinking of getting one.
For me I guess getting the crosscut sled out, then removing the blade guard etc is a pain in the a@se so I have been toying with the idea of a scms that cut cut up to 300mm etc.
I guess it just makes it simpler?
What does everyone think?

Re: differance scms or table saw
Ita great for angle cuts on wood wider than the non slider mitre saw can handle. However for 90 degree cuts the sled does an equivalent job I would have thought.

Greg You need both , theres a heap you can do on a table saw that you can never do with a scms and theres a heap you cant do on a table saw
For me one of my most used tools is my scms ........but there are jobs that just can't be done without a table saw
Triton work centers sort of covered a lot of both which is why they were so popular
Bight the bullet ( dont tell you know who ) and buy both

If it's not a matter of economics get both I agree! If you have to choose then get the table saw and a non-slider cms which is a great deal cheaper - half price usually. I have a mak cms and a mbs300 cabinet table saw and I have not encountered issues so far but then again I have only been doing wood work hobby for a year or so! I did have a ryobi slider cms and it sucked but I could only afford $400 and thought the same as you get a mak!

However do not sacrifice quality of your table saw to get a better scms - it's not worth it. Unless all you are doing is cross cuts!
Edit - just reread OP - you already have ts!

Ma
Hey all, first timer on site. I have enjoyed discussions for a while. Any suggestions on what breed scms is the best for DIY light work (internal walls and new kitchen)? I'm not in to buying cheap stuff to save $100 which will cost in the long term, whether my time or money wasted complaining at 'toy shops' or writing to Fair Trading etc. Thanks in anticipation.

Much what I was thinking too. Spend a few more $$$ and get something a step up from the Ryobi category. I'm looking at the Makita LS1016 and Makita LS1018 .... but are they

scms's are much faster, quieter and are portable, and are much much much safer to use, as they dont kickback. i dont think you can do compound mitre cuts with a table saw, so theres another bonus with the mitre saw. the makitas are excelent as they are easy to use when cutting small bits of wood, and they have a trenching facility(good for making joints) so they are very handy, id say get one definatly
