    Default 'Big' Drill replacement

    PDC Vs corded hammer opinions

    « on: Today at 03:10 PM »

I managed to kill my trusty old Black & Decker hammer drill yesterday. All the smoke came out while using a 6 inch hole saw. So time for a replacement.

I have a Festool T18 which is more than enough for most of my drill/driving tasks. The B&D came out for drilling masonry, and for big jobs that needed the additional handle for extra support and stability - like those giant hole saws.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a replacement? Corded is fine - I don't use it enough to necessarily want a battery option, and I don't really want another battery system knocking about (so it would be something like a Festool PDC if I went battery). Makita, DeWalt, Milwaukee? Around 750W I guess.

Uses: Mostly DIY masonry stuff - concrete and brick around the house, and bigger drilling jobs like hole saws into wood.

For masonry a rotary hammer drill is the best and the only reason to use a hammer over a rotary hammer function is if it is too aggressive like drilling through tiles.
The chuck will be a SDS type and then you get a conventional chuck with the SDS shaft to adapt it to take normal bits and holesaws, core drills etc. plus they have a hammer mode where you can fit a point or chisel.

Do your wallet a favour and buy an Ozito one for less than $150 and it will do the job just fine.
A lot of contractors buy them putting Dynabolts into slabs all day and they stand up to the job as good as the others.
I have a Hilti , a Ramset and Ozito one and wouldn’t pay the extra coin for the first two again.

Anyway, regardless of brand you choose, this style of drill would be the best all rounder for you.

Hummm . . . . 6" holes is going to kill any regular drill.
Like Beardy I suggest you purchase a demolition drill if you want to drill 6" holes.
I still have an Ozito demo drill that I purchased some 15 odd years ago and it still works just fine.
It came with a regular chuck with an SDS arbor adapter to fit the drill so I can still use regular drill bits if want to.

I didn’t even think of changing the chuck on an SDS drill - thanks! And I never bothered considering Ozito as I’d chucked them in the ‘cheap junk’ bag.

I’ll have a look in the local Bunnings

I have had a couple of ozito and abused them like I was mining iron ore and they are great, for what you want it would be ideal

Thank you all for the excellent and fast advice - I’m going to pick up the 900w version of the Ozito this weekend, along with a dynalink adaptor and chuck. This’ll see me through the new year shed-sitting period while I wait for an SDS adaptor for my Festool chucks.

And when I’m rich and famous and need a battery option that matches my T18 drill, I can grab a BHC18.

Result! Moochos grassy- to y'all for the cheapo SDS option. It's like a knife through butter. I owe you strong drink.

A scintillating video of the effort, packed with suspense, emotion, drama....
