Fence Slats to Size
Hi all,
I've had a stack of timber milled on the family farm to build my fence and deck slats on our house in Brisbane (90mmx20mm). It was cut by a Lucas Saw Mill. The timber is red gum and was felled 3 years before milling. I have about 550 linear metres to prepare for the fence and deck.
Can you recommend the best tools to purchase to prepare the slats? I've accepted that I need a mitre saw, but a friend has recommended a thicknesser or spindle moulder to machine the slats (rather than the arduous task of sanding every slat)?
The budget is around $1000 for the tools..... (I'm working on the one new power tool per project philosophy).
I've been told about 50 cents a metre to have it put through a thicknesser at a timber supplier, but I'd rather put that towards my own tools for future work.
Thanks for any advice or assistance.
Dan.

Miter saw is a must.
I would say that a thicknesser is a must as well because it will leave an acceptable finish without the need to sand much if at all and 500+ lin.m is going to be painful without one. It will also keep them consistent.
Finally, if you want an edge profile, a router table is a good idea - a power feed would make life easier but you could do it without.
Getting all that for a grand might be a bit difficult though

gday
i can get it profiled pretty cheap, into whatever profile you like. should be a lot less than .50c/m for that size.
if they were cut t 90 x 20 there gunna be small once there dressed. they will come down to 85 x 15.
you can do it yourself if you had a thicknesses, i have run 2000m of 2x1 spotty threw my ryobi in one go before, dressed it 4 sides so that 8000m pushed threw. it tok ages but we got it done, thicknesses never been the same since.
you can pickup a router table pretty cheep $100 or make one even cheeper. if you want to do pencil round or anyhting like that.

Dan,
Please tell me that that you don't intend to use these for decking and only for slats on a fence around it? If they are rough sawn to 20mm by the time they are dressed on both faces, you will be lucky to get 15mm, leaving a board which would not be thick/strong enough for decking unless your bearers were somewhat closer together than the normal 450mm centres.Kev
