OK, I'll give it another try. It's measuring 0.5V across the -ve & +ve terminals. My money is on it being rooted.

    Bummer

Now I'm embarrassed.... suggesting you go aftermarket to save a few quid.

I've purchased after-market Nicads from a couple of on-line Oz sources for several years. There have been for 12v and 15.6v Panasonics drills. The 12v is about 20 years old now and been through a few replacement batteries, all of which have been excellent. The 15.6v went through one change, which was OK, but I gave the drill away as it was too large and over-powerful for building furniture. I replaced this with a Festool 10.6v. The Panasonic 12v is still my go-to cordless drill, and the batteries (two of them) continue to work as-new.

    Regards from Perth

Don't be embarrassed Ratbag. It might just be a rare dodgy battery. We'll see how the replacement works.

    Derek,
I think Nicads are much more robust than Li Ion. There's little to no electronics in a nicad battery pack either.

Thanks Brett. I'm glad they are good. I hope they last.

I returned my non-genuine Metabo battery which was DOA. I thought they were going to send me a replacement, but they gave me a refund. I dunno whether this was due to a misunderstanding or they don't have any more in stock. Their English isn't great, so there's probably no point in me asking. I'm loathe to order another one from them in case I get another dud. It's obvious they don't test the batteries before they go out.

The place you got yours from doesn't have Metabo replacement batteries. I'm now considering this mob: http://www.battery.com.au/power-tool...es/tme203.html

At least they admit their cells are made in China.
