    Default GMC Triple Blade Planer

    Hi,

I have just purchased the GMC triple blade planer from bunnies for $98. I purchased it because I have a number of doors that I need to plane down before hanging.....

My practice runs on some old doors seem to go ok...but when I started on my hume internal doors I noticed that the blades became pitted and burnt looking...I changed them (turned the upside down) and it worked ok for a bit and the blades started to pit again....

Can I fix this with better blades? Am I better off taking it back and using the cash for a deposit on a better piece of kit.....

    Advice appreciated...

    Regards

    Waz

If you are unlikely to use the Plane again afterwards, make use of the return / replace warranty. Thats what you pay for when you buy DIY.

Otherwise look into the Makita / Bosch line. I have a couple that are 15+ years old as far as I can assertain (hand me downs), have seen site use and still have the original blade. Work a treat even today.
    J!

My opinion is neither copyrighted nor trademarked, and its price is competitive. If you like, I'll trade for one of yours.

That's funny, I have the triple and have used it on everything from crapiata to red Ironbark with no damage to the blades. If you have finished this project take it back and get a replacement, maybe you struck the lemon! Or if you are truely unhappy with its performance get your money back and buy a makita.

funny , the same sort of thing happened to me, i got a ryobi planer (same L-cheapo tool as GMC) and i crocked it only after a short time , got a makita , beautiful, the blades still are a little thin but it is just such a tough machine, same thing happened with a sander, first i got a ryobi that lasted quite a while before it died,i then (still under warranty) got another , which after 10 minutes smoke started coming out , i exchanged it for a GMC , it lasted 5min. before catching fire a burning up like a spacecraft on re-entry. so i ended up falking out the extra cash on top of the GMC return and getting a makita belt sander, beautiful ! ... dewalt , so i'm told is also very good...spend the extra money , you say you may only need a planer for these few jobs but maybe down the track another job will need you attention ...so think long term...

oh, and before you buy, ring up one of the better tool companies and ask them out of all the planers , which one has the thickest and strongest blades, they may sugest something else, then you can just get it from bunnings when you trade up...

you guys have way too much fun with power tools, I've never had any of my crappy tools smoke, burst on fire or self combust... you dont happen to wash them down in metho before you use them do you?????????

With regards to the planers, they are very simple machines, if the cylinders are running true ie there is no side to side movement or loosening and your blades are dying prematurely then you have crappy blades.

Check the depth of cut; sounds too high. Multiple passes with lower depth may help. Change to TC blades – they have HSS & TC blades.

If you still don’t like it then take a look at Makita 1923H.

I've also been using the wood razor will no ill effects. I was actually rather pleased with is given it's price. Certainly got a good finish, and smooth operation. With all the really cheap tools, they can be improved vastly with a blade upgrade. I buy then on the assumption that I will do this, and factor that into the price.
