Which jointer for under $1200?
Hi,
I'm looking to get a jointer at this years working with wood show. I've been doing some research and found the following on offer so far:
- Carbetec CTJ-350 8" Jointer for ~$1100
- Carbetec CTJ-150 6" long bed for ~$800
- MIK International JET JJ-6 6" long bed for ~$880
- Leda WJ-350 8" Jointer for ~$1100
I like the idea that the Carbetec 8" one is on wheels which means I can go with the bigger machine and move it out the way when I need to do other work.
While not always needing an 8", most of the stuff a 6" will do, but not being restricted to 6" is also appealing.
Has anyone got any experiences with any of these machines and/or companies good or bad?
Also any other suggestions. I'm a little limited living in Adelaide, which means needing to pay freight for the carbetec ones and not having dealt with them in the past, am wondering how reliable they are as a company when it comes to warranties.
Carbe-tec won't be at the Working with Wood show in Adelaide this year so it's a case of buying site unseen if I go with it, so really keen for feedback.
Thanks in advance

C/tec Melbourne have the 8" jointer on sale for $995, might pay to give them a ring. At that price it is a no-brainer!

Hey BS (actually that doesn't look to good, better call you Big Shed), where did you see that. Their Catalogue on line shows:
CTJ-350 8" Jointer w/ Cabinet Stand $1,349.00
CTJ-350PACK 8" Jointer with FM-300 2hp Dust Extractor $1,549.00
I'm thinking about something like this myself, toss up between this or jet JJ-8CS 8" at around $ 1425, however if C/tec $995 it does become a no brainer

I would go with the 8" C/tec, the one I have has been a great solid working machine for the last 6-7 years, still dead flat and the longer bed makes jointing much easier
Cheers

In their Springvale showroom when I picked up my new tablesaw, about 2 weeks ago. Hence my suggestion of a phone call.
I was eying one of myself, but having just bought a 15" thicknesser and an new tablesaw, I thought it prudent to pull my horns in.
Still thinking about it though, nice looking bit of machinery, the colour even matches my thicknesser

Have you checked out Gary Pye Woodturning? I think the same Jet 6" Jointer sells for $650 there. Shipping to Sydney is <$100, although it might cost about the same to Adelaide. Might as well e-mail to find out. http://gpwoodturning.sitesuitestores..._id=1107219942

When I began researching jointers some time back, the best advice I recieved was to get the longest bed one could aford, I chose one with a 6 ft bed, I have no regretts, I picked up a hafco 8" 2hp for under $800, I cannot imagine a jointer with anything less than 6ft,

I'm with Geoff, i have what is probably the same jointer as him, less than $800 for the 8",Hafco, for the money, i'm very happy with it!!! My advice would be to buy as wide and as long a machine as you can afford!!! The 8" would be the smallest i'd ever go, and the longest bed you can find will be a great benefit. I've been thinking about making infeed and outfeed extensions for ease of use with long pieces for doors etc...
It's Ripping Time!!!
