    Default Jointer Blades

    Hi all,
I realise that this is a very subjective question but how often do you sharpen/ replace your jointer blades? Obviously when they're blunt but how is that determined as well? I got a Carbetec CTJ-150 and it's a great machine but just recently it's much noisier and has more vibration when I'm passing timber, even pine, across the cutter head. I have not changed the blades as yet. Should I sharpen or replace and should I expect much cursing and frustration?

    Cheers
    Pete.

    Thumbs up

I have a Tormek so I can afford to sharpen my jointer blades and thicknesser blades as often as possible. I generally do it every 2 to 3 major projects.

Sharp blades are good for the timber and the machines.

Sounds like they're due for a sharpen. I usually don't bother until the nicks get so big they look like raised beads

You can buy a small sharpening/honing guide from carbartec and other places, which is specially designed for jointer blades ad allows you to sharpen the blades without removing them. It's good for touching them up. Costs around $35 from memory. After a while though, there's no option but to remove them and replace or sharpen.
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.
