    Default Jointer/Planer knives 18%

    Guys,
I have what I believe is 18% tungsten jointer and thicknesser knives that was purchased at a reputable WW store in Perth. Without any markings on them, how would I tell the difference if they get mixed up with the standard knives?? Is there a way to tell the difference?
    Regards
    Les

Probably not. Unless you put some machinist's blue or similar on the knife for reference.
The 18% Tungsten should be a tougher alloy and retain its edge a bit better
    that normal HSS.
The blades that I use are available in HSS or Cobalt, but the Cobalt in this case is also a fractional part of the alloy. (Lasts 2-3 times longer than HSS)

Does this make sense? Its late.

The 18% will dent the HSS...

Maybe different results with a file test, or (gently) with a spark test on the grinder)

Get a permanent marker pen and write $100 on the Tungsten rich ones, that'd make me remember.

After speaking to one of the saw doctors, it seems the only way to tell is to first of all trust the packaging:eek: and the put some permanent marking on the blades. Although in my case the HSS are wider that the 18 % blades. I still reckon the factory should put a mark on them though.
