Default Locating a room air filter

    Hi guys,

I am getting motivated to finish my workshop with pretty much the electrics to do before I can move in. I have one of these Carbatec room air filters and was looking for advice on where to locate it. I will be suspending it from the ceiling but want to know where best to locate it - ie a corner say 1 metre from the walls? Anyway I would welcome advice.

    Cheers

I would say directly above the area where most of the dust is generated. That is where I have mine.
The closer to the source of the dust the more effective it will be.

Numbat, My experience in dealing with very fine dust, which this unit is designed to remove, is that you need it in the middle of the room. Fine dust is within seconds of being generated spread to all corners of the room. You would need a massive ducted unit to collect it all from the source while it is being generated. If you have the unit in the middle of the room it can scavenge the particles from all around it. If you have it to one side it is less likely to be able to collect the dust from the further away and you can end up with dead spots in which the dust is never collected. Remember most of this is dust you cannot see so you cannot go by the visual clues of the dust you can see. I have done measurements in clean air laboratories with mobile particle counters and the central location method seemed to work best. Of course there may well be practical reasons why this is not possible so you can just go as close as possible to the centre.

Thanks for the responses guys. I had heard that you were meant to put them in a corner somewhere - but I may have that wrong.

    Hi Numbat,

I have mine in the corner away from my door. The theory is to circulate air around the room. Also creates a bit of cooling during the hotter days, Perth is a bit hot at the moment.

Mounting the unit in the corner also means I am less likely to bash it with a long board or sheet when moving them around, especially over my table saw. I hit my overhead light now is it is.

    Cheers,

    Buz.
