Thread: What should I look out for moving from mains powered jigsaw to battery powered jigsaw

Bought myself a blue Bosch 18v and I have to say the battery life is not great..it's OK I have 5 batteries. I bought a new one for increased cutting capacity and better accuracy. My old green Bosch is just tired and I cannot get a right angle cut any more...on anything with any thickness to it...

I used a battery cutting a 400dia hole in one of my 40mm timber benchtops for a sink...

Would not buy another battery one...

If you can go brushless, as well as being a bit quieter you will find the batteries last a lot longer.

Brushless are another $200 I think.
Regrettably, I couldn't afford it.

Only advice I can offer here is to pick a manufacturer that won't change its batteries every few years. That way every tool can share batteries.

I personally have plumped for AEG; fair pricing, different battery sizes and a spectacularly good guarantee along with a wide range of skins including a sliding compound mitre saw. I have two 2.5Ah and two 5Ah batteries that will cover my needs for years to come.

And I like the orange colour, it goes with my Triton tools!

So broke down and used the Makita 18v Jigsaw DJV180z
with a new blade cuts thru 1/2" (12mm) ply like butter.
No tear out.

A look on ebay should get you no name brand replacement batteries for many power tools. A couple of years back I replaced the batteries for my 18v makita drill rather than toss it in the bin. I can still use the original charger and more amp hours too. You do have to do some homework and ensure they are right for the tool and charger but most of the info is there if you look with model numbers and the like.

Never really trusted after market replacements.
Seems too expensive for what they are.

Had my OLD festo 9v batteries renewed at a Batteries Plus. Sure, it cost a bit more than online, but I knew I could go back to them if it was not successful..

Then a year later the drill itself died..I got grumpy and pulled out the receipt, 296 dollars 22 years ago...what can I say?

$1.12 a month over 22 years.
I call that a good buy!

Wonder what the cost of a battery renewal would cost at Batteries Plus.
Maybe just buying a new one would be less headache?

Kinda pushed thru today finishing jigsawing the templates.
1 battery recharge.
Noticed the JS getting warm.
So left it in front of the fan for an hour.
And finished the job.

It is possible that the store had run out, but 18v batteries for Makita LXT range are available from 1.5Ah to 5Ah. The newer batteries (at last) have a 'battery fuel gauge' on them. It should also be noted that the smallest batteries have been replaced with a 1.5Ah, BL1815N, and now a 2.0Ah, BL1820B. (The B at the end indicates 'Battery Fuel Gauge'.)
