Makita drill chuck problems
Whenever I use a Makita hand drill with a thin drill, the drill comes loose and sticks in the hole. This happens regularly with the battery operated drill and the corded drill. I've talked to the 'man at the shop' but I'm not satisfied with the answers or the fact that the drills only work well with bits over 10mm.
Is it a case of 'bring back the chuck key?'

SImply get a new chuck, you will find that the jaws wear after a while and loose that nice crisp edge on the jaws ......

I have the same problem with my Makita corded keyless chuck drill. Since new it does not hold small drill bits. They come loose during drilling. Don't even use the hammer action. It takes 2 sec to loosen. I now only use it for my Kreg jig operations - 3/8" drill bit. It holds this one well enough.

Thanks Les. Must have known that I've had the Leigh jig out and have made 2 blanket boxes in the last 2 weeks. Used the big Triton router because it's less mucking around.

I have never owned a keyless drill that didn't have that problem.
Only way to avoid it is to never drill deep enough to let the chuck touch the material, it make the rotation work in the opposite way and the drill comes loose.

I have a 6 month old Makita 12V cordless, and it's a pain , as the chuck will not tighten sufficiently, on a screw driver tip, and they continually fall out when I lift the drill away.
And if removing screws , it keeps loosening off. A real pain in the A#$E.
I have never had this with my other cordless drills, all these has keyless chucks , as does the Makita.

Don't tell me I finally got lucky.
Got 2 battery Makitas [18V lithiums] and never had a problem small bit or large or driver bits - not my usual luck.

you have to get a good 1 now and again, your just lucky!!
Seriously, hey make good tools , but I think the chucks need to be looked at, it may be a batch got through that were just a bit suspect , with jaws / scrolls that were borderline to specification,.

I have an old Makita cordless with keyless chuck and two DeWalt cordless with key less chuck, one of which is a hammer.
The only problem I experience with the Makita compared to the DeWalt has to do with hte tightening of the chuck. The makita doesn't have the same clutch (not sure if thats the right description) set up as the DeWalts. When you tighten the cuck on the DeWalts the chuck doesn't spin when you apply pressure, the Makita does, you have to use two hands to tighten it.
Never had the DeWalt loosen during operation.
I have found the Makita will loosen if you make contact with the chuck during operation. Similar to what Wolffie said.
I also use a Panasonic cordless a bit when working for the engineer bloke I work for, and it doesn't come undone and will try and twist your arm out of the socket if it happens to grab. I'll be buying them as I need to replace my older ones, they are dear but very good drills. If you find you have dug yourself a hole, the first thing to do is stop digging.
I just finished child-proofing our house - but they still get inside.

I don't think that the chucks were made for small drills . I use a Dremil for that sort of stuff

One trick I found was to just grip the chuck as the hole is finished, that tightens it and the bit comes out of the hole easily.
