    Default Makita HP1501 switch trigger

    G'day mates,

    I have a 3 year old Makita HP1501 hand drill with a variable speed trigger. Recently, the trigger switch no longer allow variable speed. It will only spin at full speed, as pressing the trigger slowly will not start the drill until I press it fully.

    I always vacuum clean the drill after use to prevent any dust build up.

    Have anyone experience the same issue with this drill? Was there any particular maintenance to perform? I don't mind opening it up to take a look.

    Since it is out of warranty, I am not sure if it is worth getting repaired. I found some parts for the drill here, Norwest Tool Centre - Professional Quality Tools :: HP1501.

    I believe the switch is part no. 6 and at about $70, I would rather get a new drill.

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Does the drill take excessive time to get up to speed at full trigger depression ? Does there seem to be excessive sparking visible through the ventilation slots in the plastic body of the drill?

    If the problem is not the trigger, it could be worn brushes that are not making proper contact with the armature and only deliver enough current to run the drill when you select full power with the trigger.

    It cost me $15 to have the brushes replaced in a similar model Makita hammer drill.

    Thanks for the tip Dion N. Greatly appreciated. I will take a closed look when firing up the drill.

    If you don't mind me asking, where did you purchase and/or replace the carbon brushes? Did you get it done at a local Makita service agent and was it a user replaceable part?

    Local Powertool repair place - about 5 minutes while I waited. You can replace them yourself, but it would be fairly finicky - the guy at the powertool place used a special tool.
