    Question Bench Grinder Question

I have just purchased an 8" bench grinder only to find that the wheels seem to be considerably out of round. When I try to grind a tool, it just bounces rather than staying on the grinding surface. Is there any easy/quick remedy to fix this?

    Thanks.
    Steve

    G'day Steve

You will need to tune the grinder (basically balance the wheels) before you use it.

Loosen off the nut and turn the wheel at one end 1/4 turn tighten nut and see if it runs better. Keep doing this until you find the best spot with the least vibration. Then turn 1/8th turn from this piont until the wheel runs true or as true as possible. Then do the one at the other end.

Any small vibration from unbalancing thet is left sfter this action can be taken out with a good wheel dresser. You do have a wheel dresser? No one would buy a grinder without a dresser. Would they?

It is also a good idea to put a piece of blotting paper as a washer either side of the wheel so as the two large plated are seated onto the paper before tightening the nuts.

Hope this is of some help and you can understand what I have said.

    Cheers
    Neil

PS.I actually made a pilot for a sharpening video a number of years ago. Tuning the grinder was an important part of it. We showed it at the Melbourne Working With Wood Show about 5 years ago to around 10,000 people and could could not find one person who said they would buy a copy when it was made.

The video was scrapped. And there are still thousands out there who have no idea hot th properly sharpen the tools they use.

While the 'tuning' advice is no doubt good advice the stone also needs to be 'faced' or trued up before use and even constantly during the life of the wheel.
There are mechanical tools looking like a spoked wheel without the rim or a 'diamond' truing stone. I use the latter because I find that the mechanical item gets hard to use when it wears.
