Default Papers for GMC KAT 150B

    Hi All,

I recently picked up a GMC KAT 150 hand sander. I have to repair some rusty steel casement windows and thought it would help with the sanding.

I've done some searching online and found that the papers for these are hard to get (most don't have the right dust hole pattern), so I'm thinking of making my own - probably a cheaper option anyway!

Just wondering what people recommend for punching the holes (10mm) - I was thinking that a leather punch would do the job but is there anything else?

    Cheers,

    Chris

99% of all tools referred to as “hole” or “gasket” punches are actually wad punches; they make brilliant wads while leaving a crappy distorted hole. If the bevel is ground on the outside then it’s a wad punch.

I recommend making your own from some steel tubing; hold the tube in a rotating drill chuck and grind the bevel on the INSIDE of the tube using a Dremmel. And punch into some hard-ish wood endgrain. The abrasive is going to rapidly blunt any edge that put through it so expect to resharpen often.

Occasionally I have to get ROS discs without holes and need to punch them myself, which I do with a wad punch. I clamp a length of timber vertical in the vice so the endgrain is up. Put the paper down so the non abrasive side is up and the abrasive is against the timber. The holes come out quite well with very little raised material around the hole diameter. Make sure to keep using different parts of the timber as each time you punch one out it will leave a circle where the punch goes through. I always try to punch with the minimum force required to get the wad out so you are not pushing the punch far into the paper, as the further you go into the paper the more it will extrude the edge of the hole out.
I agree with Chief that a punch with the taper on the inside is the best option but I have always had good success with my method.
