G'day,

Regardless of that, I have to say that I think it's beyond a joke that things like that get such high prices. But, the bottom will fall out of that stupid $ paid for hand planes soon enough, an example my wife a few years ago sold Little Golden Books on Bay, some sold for inexcess of US$100. The everyne caught on and thought I can make a killing here selling LGB, soon enough there was an over supply of hard to get LGB and the market fell into decline. It'll happen to hand planes so I'll just sit baqck and wait.

I've got better money to spend things on.

I think someone with a striking resemblance to an individual with a striking implement slung over his shoulder predicted this would happen.

Who cares what it makes, as a user, the #1 is a joke. Oh, unless you suffer from debilitating disease making your hands really really really small.

I cant understand the obsession with overpriced second hand planes. Cheap ones yes OK. But please explain to me why you wouldn't buy the Lie Nielsen copy of this plane.

Collectors collect, accumulators accumulate.

Its just worth a lot of money to someone that collects rare planes.
I don't think that theres any other reason or logic applied.

Steve, at the price of that #50 I would rather get a #45.

Boban, a LN is still a copy, even though it is better made than the Stanley original. A collector wants rarity, which is also associated with original condition. A LN will never be rare even if it is in original condition. While the LN often will sell for close to its purchase price on eBay, only an idiot will spend more than this. There is no price limit for original and rare Stanley planes. The drive (for some) is to find an original and complete piece - spare parts help in this regard.

I'd never spend $300 on a plane period. I'd buy a bunch of timber instead. Getting tired of working old bed slats, vj's, house studs, fence posts, firewood, tree stakes, match sticks, tooth picks....

............I mean, have you ever tried thicknessing a match stick ?....eh !

Just caught the end of the auction - won at $425 by Hans Brunner. I would say that he'll be selling it as spare parts. Keep an eye on his site.
