    Hi Ken,

no, they are welded shut (black knurled body onto toothed ring), so when you see one in pieces, it's definitely broken. A chuck can become stuck by internal soiling, but you can flush that out by pouring a steady drizzle of kerosine, white spirit, etc,. into it and keep giving the thing a gymnastic workout (try to turn it open and closed all the way, again and again and again and notice how the action will get suppler every time, allowing you to turn for more revolutions at every try). Trickle solvent between the opening between the key hole preforated section and the toothed ring, but also pour solvent inside the bit insertion hole where the three clamp beaks are. When the action is smooth, let throroughly dry and squirt in some oil. Exercise the chuck some more until the oil has spread inside the mechanism. Eventually it should go smooth as silk again. If not, the mechanism has been damaged (chuck has been stored with bit too tightly spanned inside it for too long a time, which has deformed the thread inside). Always store a drill with the chuck lightly oiled or greased, without a drill bit or anything else left spanned tightly in it. The same goes for bits in router spanners. Tight spanning will eventually lead to the certain degree of binding between the metal parts, making them increasingly hard to loosen without damage.

    good luck
