Ryobi AP13 Thicknesser-sharpening
My Ryobi AP13 thicknesser is about 14 months old.
I am quite pleased with it, but it seems now that I need either to replace the blades or sharpen them.
The manual explains how to replace the blades.
In the "Troubleshooting" section it refers in two places as follows:
"Fuzzy grain -possible cause- dull blades- remedy - sharpen blades"
"Torn grain - possible cause - dull blades - remedy - sharpen blades"
However no-where does the manual give any hint as to the sharpening process.
I could of course try the Ryobi 0800 number, but before I do so I wonder whether any of our forum-ites had any advice on the sharpening process.
My level of skill in such matters is often subject to Murphy's first law.
I look forward to all comments.
Cheers,

Step 1. Remove the knives
Step2. Take them to your local sharpening service (provided they are able to be sharpened. I believe some thicknessers have knives that can't be re-sharpened)
Step3. Replace the newly sharpened knives in the machine.

The blades can be reground or sharpened as craig says
If you only want to touch them up at home you can try this.
I have a woodcraft 12" thicknesser and to re sharpen the blades I ran two grooves the same depth into a block of wood at 47* the angle on the original blades
When the blades are in the block the two cutting edges are then parellel and can be honed touched up relatively easily
Or if realy bad done on a belt sander if its long enough, The blades I do on the sander however I use on recycled wood getting rid of paint etc

It works for me

Ryobi thicknesser sharpening
Thanks Russell and Craig for your advice.
I'm going to try Russell's method, but will take the precuation of ordering a second set of blades for "best".
Cheers

Check the price of new blades also. For some reason I thought I saw replacement blades for under $20 the other day at Bunnies. Might be just as cheap to buy new ones, although these might have been on sale (can't remember).
How much wood could the woodchuck chuck if the woodchuck could chuck wood?
