    Default Sander dust collecting...

Today i had a strange problem... I put down a new floor in my home and I was using a belt sander to sand the floor. I had this great idea of hooking my my central vac to the exit to the dust bag on my sander. When I turned the sander on it would not run with the vacuum turned on. Made no sense to me. if anything it should have run faster. Even if I turned on the sander first then the sander it would stall the motor right out. Any ideas?

    What sort of sander?

If the air flow from the sander is greater than what the Vac can carry away then the sander may perceive this as some sort of blockage and stop to prevent the sander motor from overheating.

The vacuum is much higher flow than the sander. It acts like it's trying the turn the sanders fan backwards but you would thing that the fan should be turning the same way as the flow.

What happens if you block the fan outlets from the sander wth you hand - does it stop the sander? I doubt it.

What is more likely is the vacuum is taking away too much back pressure from the fan. As a result it tries to spin faster and hence draws too much current and the Sander electronics simply say "Too much current - STOP"
It sounds counter intuitive but the less back pressure on a fan the more current it draws. This why a blocked DC draws much less current than a free running DC and why some DCs should not be run without filter bags and a restrictive opening on teh front of the impeller.

    Try this.
Insert a short (2") piece of PVC between the sander and the VAC hose and mark a circle out around the middle of the PVC an drill two 1/8" or 1/4" holes 0 and 180º apart on the circle and try it out, then try adding 2 more at 90 and 270º mark etc and see what happens.

It would really be useful to know the make/model of the sander.

It probably still has a simple motor current limit. Some photo's would be useful.

It will probably have a current limiter or at least a thermal cut out.

Report back when you try out the PVC with holes in it idea.

Could the vacuum have been sucking the sanding belt onto the dust outlet.
