    Default A serve for Bosch

this post is an "Anti Bosch" spray.

I bought a Bosch 14.4 v batt drill not a year ago (the version from Bunnings - green, box, 2 batts and a charger) and while Im happy with the machine itself the batteries are utter Shyte. dont hold charge, cant drive more than 20 or so screws into hardwoods before going flat. utter shyte. the batt drill is sadly let down by the batteries. otherwise when its working its a nice comfortable unit.

heres the rub : I contacted Bosch via thier website to ask whats the deal, Ie known prob etc... and whilst they promise to "contact within 24hrs" I have not heard diddly from them in 3 weeks!!! the Shytes!

Yes I did what shoudl be done with new nicads by overcharging and making sure I always completely discharge but still they suck.

I wont be buying bosch again, not because if faulty batts - that can happen anytome and can be addressed but poor service is another matter. I hope someone from Bosch reads this

I would recommend that you diont buy them either. thisis a shame as I have 2 very old bosch units (Drill and orbital) and they are great - still running after 15 yrs!!!

    Bummer

    Happy new year all.

How much did you pay for the Botsch?

I got a $49 Ozito with 2 batteries for my wife less than 12 months ago & the batteries have gone the same way.

There was a post earlier in the month reference an article in Silicon Chip about why the batteries fail. Not the batteries, its the charger that's the problem. The magazine also included an article on a charger, and details of a kit.
Those that are good at searching the forum will find it (I'm not...must ask the wrong questions)

Hitachi 14.4v drill Model DS140vb drill with battery charger uc14yf2 (not the standard battery charger that comes with the drill) 3 years with 2 batteries use it at work and home best value drill Ive come across think there now less then $150 bucks
and yes the trick with the batteries is the charger no doubt about it, you can fry the batteries so easy with a cheap crappy battery charger
by far the best drill / charger combo Ive had

    But I don't know how to give a reference....yet!
It was on the 4 December 2006.

Must find out how to do that thing.
Some funny things in the thread, but the articles in the magazine explain why there is a problem/how to solve the problem/and how to get what you need in your own workshop.
I have tried to buy replacement battery packs for cordless products, to find that they are more expensive than the original product.
Maybe there's an answer from Silicon Chip?????
The editorial also gives us all the strap for chuckng these packs away. Like my mum!!!

NiCad batteries and the so-called 'memory effect'

I hate this urban legend...the facts are:

    1) You - unless you are NASA and monitor the charge/discharge cycles of your individual cells very exactly - will never notice memory effect in NiCad batteries.

    2) The practice of 'deep cycling' (fully discharging) NiCad batteries 'to keep them working longer' will reduce their lifespan. So they will just end up as landfill sooner.

    3) What you are actually seeing is voltage depression. The cell in the battery with the least capacity gets flattened to a point where it will start to accept a reverse charge from the surrounding cells and this starts to destroy the cell.

Good NiCad battery packs have the discharge characteristics of individual cells tested and matched to certain tolerances; other packs are just any handfull of cells from the box, so the difference between 'strongest cell' and 'weakest cell' will be much greater - leading to the much earlier demise of the weakest cell, and so, the entire pack.

    Full details from the oracle...

Well Ive been reading a bit about Ni-CD batteries as I have 2 Dewalt 14.4v batteries that are stuffed but the drill is still fine. I though the freezer method might work, but it seems in the end there is only one real solution....replacement.

I was not going to buy more batteries, as the last 2 I bought cost $300 ($150 each, back when powerful cordless drills were new)..
But now my interest is piqued, as I found this place "Hollyhock Batteries Plus" and they have the battery for my drill at $70.
Anyone bought Power tool batteries from here? or got some suggestions as to why it might be a bad idea?

I would really like to keep this drill going, as it is on its second motor and gearbox and is over 8 years old

Like I said its the lack of response from Bosch that poo's me to tears not hte fault in the batteries. I tried to get replacement bats for my 15yr old Mak 7.2 but the replacements are almost $90!!! I think I'll bite the bullet and just get me a nice new Panasonic 14.4 at the wood show in June. either that or one of the combo sets that Mak sells with torches and the like....

    Def no Bosch anymore though!
