Slow Speed Grinders
Yesterday, on one of my rare trips to Carbatec, I stumbled across the Axminister 8" slow (1400rpm) grinder. Nice looking bit of kit. "This may be the answer", I thought. I have given up on the Viking (now Delta) water stone (too slow for re-shaping, too coarse for finishing) and I have yet to see Derek's sander/sharpener.
Has anyone had experience with this machine, or one like it, as a sharpener?
Regards and thanks in anticipation

Hi Peter
I could not find a picture on the Carb-tec website but found this one. I assume it is the one you refer to:

I guess it depends on (a) cost, and (b) whether you want hollow ground bevels.
We will make a plan to get together at your place this weekend - I'll give you a call - and I'll bring my belt sander along with me!

Hi peter, havent got hands on experience of that machine but if its the one that derek has posted the the chances are it will be ok. Axminster product is generally very well made and reliable. Depencds of course what you can get it for.

I got one some time back mainly to sharpen HSS lathe bits (metal) and it is very good.
It seems expensive but at $169 it comes with two silicon carbide (catalogue is wrong) wheels and very sturdy rests and guards. It also has a light and container for coolant. Given all these features and the quality of the grinder it's good value for money.
I find the slower speed good and have never blued any bits.
I have not sharpened chisels or plane blades as I prefer a flat grind so I can't help you with that.Cheers,
Rod
