I bought a Stanley about 8 yrs ago for around $40 that uses a 9v battery and worked ok then although I havent used it for quite a while. They might have even improved them since.

I don't think you need to get too carried away about what type. They aren't very expensive. My GMC works fine. Cost around $30 at Bunnings. Get one which does the electrical wires as well (although I think they all do anyway).
If at first you don't succeed, give something else a go. Life is far too short to waste time trying.

Here I Is!!! You found Me!

I have a couple and each works just as well as the other. one cost around $10 USD and the other came as a Freeby with a Ryobi saw kit. If you pay more then I think it can tell the brand and such as well but most locate the density of the wall and some can even identify wires. My son has a different one and it works the same. Most are sensitive to the wall being flat and smooth. some don't care if it is smooth.

I also have a magnet in a plastic box that pivots if it nears metal, It cost a couple bucks and is as accurate most of the time. Really better for finding metal studs than the electronic one.

I bought a Stanley one from Bunnings a few months back for just under $30 and it works fine. It detects live wires as well as studs. The link below shows the particular model.

Why am I resurrecting this thread?

Well I have a Stanley stud finder (an old one), but I have never been able to make it work. I've had it about 7 years and bring it out about once a year to see if it or I have changed. The only thing that has changed is the battery (makes no diff).

I go through the calibration exercise and the green LED goes on and the beep and the red LED goes off, but then when I move it across the wall, nothing happens (and yes there are studs - it is a Gyprock wall on 4x2 studs, I have seen them).

Is this a POJ or am I using it correctly? Anyone got a helpful suggestion (aside from putting this in the buy, sell and swap forum)? I am sick of not being able to make the b@st@rd work.
    Cheers

    Default Studfinder

I've had a Stanley for a number of years. Took it out yesterday and had to replace the battery. Doesn't work still> might try a different battery.

Dunno, but if you calibrate it on an area with a stud behind it, it won't work. Nor if you calibrate it on free air. You do press and hold as you move across the wall after calibration?

If not, maybe time to get a new one - they really do work quite well. I did my hand rails on the stairs using my 77-355 and it worked great - only drilled one hole per stud with no errors.

My Stanley used to work. I fired it up again the other day, complete with a new battery but it is cactus!

Well I had one of those and like you say a POJ. I can't even find mine now so I must have put it in the garbage. I have gone back to the old method of tapping the wall and listening for the change in the sound. Works for me.
