    Default Talking about chainsaws

I have some issues with mine... (Stihl Farm Boss larger of the breed) I had it serviced a month or so back by the fella in harvey (farm gear shop) and on the first use it worked a treat for a time then ran out of oomph... meaning motor ran slow and the chain didnt rotate... ala no cutty de wood meaning IM FREEZING ME NURRIES OFF HERE!!!

Any ideas what a) caused it and b) how to fix it... or should I reach deep into the wallet and pay for the local STIHL dealer to fix it? should have taken it to them in the first place but thought help the local small shop bloke out

    Cheers

are you sure you had oil in the petrol - you know 2 stroke mixture.
or maybe a new spark plug - to hotter in the heat range.

I sounds to me like it got hot and siezed up. When it cools down it may start again but mopst likely wont.

Take the spark plug out it may be very dry - have bits stuck on it - may be a very light colour. You may be able to look down the bore and see marks/blemishes

    Hope not but good luck
    regards

    could be many things.

is the chain brake on? stupid question but it wouldnt be the first time.
take the bar off an see if it revs up with the bar off.
with the bar off see if the clutch will spin freely. (by hand)

if it runs with the bar off the nose sproket may be seazed haw long ago did you put gresse in the hole?

teh bar might be badly burred and fouling the chain or the chain drive links may be burred and fouling the bar.

check all that then let us know.

I second all of weisyboys suggestions....I melted my chain brake when I first got mine also one more thing to check is that your air filter is not blocked up !

Dingo.........that so badly sounds like Calm's suggested scenario that it is way far from funny.

I've been there & done that and the movie is lousy. We 'assumed' that the fuel in the labelled pre-mix container had actually been premixed.....the two saws (borrowed) we were using lasted about an hour before they simply wouldn't restart. Took them to the shop for a look and were given a very expensive verdict...
Ours is not to reason why.....only to point and giggle.

if teh engine has seazed then teh engine would no longer be running

it worked a treat for a time then ran out of oomph... meaning motor ran slow and the chain didnt rotate
the engine is still running but the chain aint going round. am i mis understanding?

if the engine seazed then it wouldnt run at all.

You ould be right there Carl, If that is the case maybe the oiler is not working and the chain seized in the bar.

Yep that is what I was thinking... the chain still moves SLOWLY but the engine has nothing to give ala sluggish... There WAS a click PREVIOUSLY when the brake engaged now theres nothing the bar moves quite freely no click or grab when the brake is pulled/pushed "on/off"

Did the usual (as per recommendations) fueled up and put the chain oil in... as I said it worked fine for a time then just died in the bum not totally just nothing... seemed to me like the brake was on but not quite enough to grab the chain to stop it moving?

Will get it out and start to have a gander over it on the weekend... will put the trailer on hold for a day and sort this thing out.

I'll post pics as I go along and you can let me know how Im going?

All of the above plus....the chain moves freely when cold and slow when hot, the chain and the bar are a mismatch .Wrong size chain or wrong size bar.
Take it to the Sthil rep. They know everything about the chainsaw. By the way, a bar costs a lot more than a chain. Just paid $180 for an Oregon 26" The chain is probably $40. Don't forget to grease your sprocket nose if you have one. You will need a special little greaser for that.

first i would check the spark plug could be fouled clean or replace. next chain brake off??? .then get saw to run and adjust high speed carby adjuster start 1 1/2turns out ,may not be getting enough fuel , is it fresh?? if chain is free on bar ?. then looks like you may have an expensive problem , good luck . bob
