    Hi

Any advice on which timber to attach to the steel jaws of a record woodworkers vice. Is tassie oak too hard?

    cheers

    Crapiata Pine.

Replace it every year or so... maybe longer.....doesn't dent anything.

I just put a few mm of cork on the Pattermaker's vice, no timber, and that seems to work very well as well.

Meranti, because a scrap piece was handy, like the pine it doesn't mark anything, but then it will not last as long as the harder woods.

I'm surprised no-one here has used sassafraaass or red cedar.

Are you putting dog holes in it ? ......if so something harder than pine I'd say......I use a thick piece of red gum.......harder the better I reakon to stop flex.........and maybe line them with sandpaper or carpet.......

Pine. I don't have dog holes in it though, But change often, After reading this thread will go to tassi oak next time as I have a bit of scrap to try.

I've got tassie oak too. Pine is too soft IMHO.

I use Blackbutt on mine. Was reading one of Krenov's books and he uses 1/4" masonite to line the jaws on his vice
