Woodfast 12" Saw & 6" Jointer Combo
Recently seen an advertisement in the local paper for a Woodfast 12" Saw & 6" Jointer Combo machine for $600-900 single phase.
Searched high and low for information on this type of machine.
Does anyone have experience with this type of machine ?
Good quality or similar to Taiwanese models(Hafco etc) ?
Does the price seem reasonable ?
Thanks

Woodfast, locally made (Adelaide I think) of solid construction and at that price negotiable 600-900 certainly worthy of a look especially with a 12" capacity saw.The 6 " planer should cater for most uses .pity it's not an over/under ie, planer/thicknesser.
If I was in thwe market and looking for a machine I would at least go to the trouble of checking out the Woodfast a name synonymous with a quality product and moreover if you can negotiate to the lower price then you would have something to crow(pun intended) about.
Just my views.

It "sounds like a good saw", and therefore is "much better quality than Taiwanese" ?????
How would you know that ?
What do you have against Taiwanese saws ?
What do you know about Taiwanese technology or production standards ?
Have you ever been in a Taiwanese factory ?
Chances are, at least half of the PC you are posting from is made in Taiwan.
It is sounding like blind prejudice to me.

On the Taiwanese production of woodworking machinery...the reputation that was garnered in the earlier days does not necessarily apply these days.
Some of the quality American brand tooling is manufactured off-shore and I Know for a fact that Jet has a stringent quality control system in place and that certain standards must be met in production of their name brand tooling.
I personally would'nt have a bar of them if I thought any less of their machinery standards ...and I have been down the road with cheaper machinery in the early days of bandsaws etc that required a lot of attention to get some satisfaction.
I now have four machines of a Jet brand namely Bandsaw/spindle moulder/drum sander/air recycler and it is only thru their reputation and the service backup I get along with a good product that does the job that I support Jet and all of them Taiwanese produced.
It is simply not justified to label everything out of that country as crap merely on past performance.
My local bloke (who I consider a genuine bloke and not liable to )sells and services Jet products, did a factory tour in Taiwan of the production facilty under the aegis of the American parent company and was so impressed he increased his line available along with new premises.
It goes on saying you only get what you pay for and you'll always get crap if you don't have your wits about you and research the product.
My 2c worth

To blatantly bag machinery or equipment because of its country of origin without explanation nor reason could appear to some to be racial. It contributes nothing to this board, it has not challenged anyone's ideas or preconceptions, made anyone think about the question posed or provoked any rational discussion whatsoever. All it will do is stifle sensible debate about a questioned topic – a quality of this board that makes it enjoyable to visit and contribute.
There are and will continue to be many matters on which we will all beg to differ, but please keep it sensible.Last edited by Eastie; 22nd April 2003 at 04:38 PM.

Yep, says me (my 2 cents worth)
Perhaps I've interpreted it differently to others - quite possible in a single dimension such as this.

Well well back to the main point of the conversation... Woodfast is a far superior product to date.

All the woodfast machines I've used are great quality. They were very robust and it's a shame we (Australian's) don't make them anymore.
I know the machine you refer to.
It's solid, mostly 3 phase, blade doesn,t tilt as it's more of a rip saw, fence is quite good and stable
My main peve with this model though is that the jointer should have been mounted on the opposite side to the way they are. Trying to walk around a jointer bed while pushing timber through was a pain, and also the blade wouldn't tilt ( I do heaps of bevelled cuts).
The jointer wasn't bad to use.
Yep, good machine, $600 is o.k price IMO.
Cheers

Didn't even notice the date of the original post.
Saw would be rusted away to compost by now.
Anyhow, the information's there if anyone wants it in future.

I just picked mine up last night from its original/deceased owner's son, it is a humdinger, paid $700 Now all I have to do is track down a owners manual or find one in pdf format or something along those lines
