Tangle tangle braid braid
Local fishing shop convinced me to lash out and spend the bucks on some braid line for my spinning rod and reel.
Worse thing I did this week! The braid kind of formed little knots while casting. These knots could generally be pulled out on retrieval of the lure. IF the line did not break in the first place sending the lure to the lost deep. Was very careful spooling up to make sure lines were tight etc.
What do you fellow fishers think? Is braided line a complete rip off? I plan to go back to the shop I bought it from and request a please explain on Monday.
Tried it on a Penn brand reel first up and did not like the way it was winding on to the spool. Then put the line onto a Shimano brand one only to be served up the same problems.

Nope it's magic, I have 6, 15 and 20 pound braid on three reels, some was put on at the shop and some by me.
The only one I have had trouble with was the little Shimano Sustain reel but that knotted up not long after the line roller bearing started getting notchy so I assumed it was to do with that.
You have reminded me, I need to find my knot book and fit some new line, fished with traditional stuff last time and I'd forgotten how little feel you get.

Yeah Ubernoob, I have a sneaking suspicion it has some thing to do with the reels. My missus has a reel with braid that winds on really nice with no problems. The 2 reels I tried the line kind of winds on in a lumpy fashion no matter how careful you are.

Actually I did have one stuff up with braid and it was after I did a full strip down and re-assemble on the reel, I ended up with a bulge just below the bottom of the spool. I put something back in the wrong spot in the reel and it would catch when casting but after I sorted the spooling issue it was all good again.
Which brand of braid did you get? I think I only have Nitto, there is another brand in 150LB but it's just for backing or whatever it's called.

Hi Artful
Some braids are better than others for casting lures. For example, Fins windtamer is specifically designed for casting, other brands have similar casting braids. I use braid almost exclusively and have found it better than nylon mono but it does have its drawbacks as well. The thinner the braid the 'easier' it is to tangle it and even harder to untangle. Small tackle shops depend on good service to compete against the chain stores so there is every chance they will put right your issue.

Well I went back to the shop yesterday and was told it was the fault of both the reels I had used. Nether of them had been manufactured with braid in mind. Which is why they were laying the line on the spool in such an uneven manner. So I bought a reel that was designed for use with braid plus another 150 metres of braid and spent the arvo spinning away with no problems.

Hey mate, I'll give you a hint: if your line is spooling towards the back of the reel, remove one of the washers on the drag stack. Theres an article on this in an old Modern Fishing mag ive got next to the dunny. I tried it on one my reels and it worked a treat, with no effect on drag. As for braid, takes a bit of swearing and opening of the wallet at first, but once you get the hang of it, you'll never go back. Something about the noise it makes as your winning a lost battle. Keep trying, look online for specials, ebay etc....good luck mate

I first tried braid using Fireline, and had a lot of problems with tangling. Since I changed to Fins Windtamer I have never looked back, I love braid and think it's magic. By the way I use inexpensive Shimano reels with no problems.
