Brand new Lucas Mill 10/30
Thanks to the posters who welcomed me and made suggestions as to which mill to purchase. I decided to forego the 8/30 and go for the big boy! Ordered it yesterday and now so damned excited, cant hardly wait for me new toy!! I've never used a mill so I guess I have a steep learning curve ahead of me? I keep thinking about how to read the tree (such as where to start the first cut, 1/4 sawn etc). Any suggestions there guys? I'm pretty good with machines so I know I'll get there in the end. I have tracktor, excavator, table saw, thicknesser etc. Just love working with timber. I have a garage to build, an extension to the house, a shed, and a pergola. The reason for the purchase in the first place. I need to cut 10 inch square posts! Come on next Friday, can"t get here soon enough for me! Rickaroonie out

Sweet mate!!!! good stuff, you'll be very happy
Pity we didn't live closer, would pop over and go through some stuff with ya - have a read of https://www.woodworkforums.com/f132/b...9/#post1735698 he has just a bunch of "how to" lucas questions.
Reading the log - takes time and lots of sawdust. best thing for your 10x10 boxed posts will be 15" diameter logs, nothing worse than having a nice big log, taking a large post from the middle and decent timber from above and beside it, then losing the log when you take the post off!!!!!dammit!!!!I love my Lucas!! ...just ask me!

Love the new mill 10/30
Absolutely over the moon with my new machine. Very daunting at first but actually very easy. Just took my time and finally got to mill my first log. I couldn't believe just how easy this machine cuts. And it was a log that's been lying around for years. I though it would struggle a bit being so hard. Like a knife through butter!! Man oh man was I impressed!
Even more exciting, I never even imagined I would use these logs (about 6 or 7)! t just keeps getting better and better.
I lovemy new Lucas Mill.

Congrats on the new mill, it sure sounds like you have a new love.
Instead of posting new threads on the same topic it is really useful if they are in the same one so readers can see a development and a bigger picture story without having to search for them. Your experience with using the Lucas could make a good story so I encourage you to do this.

Been at it all day today. Milled my first of 10 large posts. One of the pics shows how I cut around the eaten out heartwood. And a lot more floor boards. I spent some time producing an assembly line with 5 logs ready to roll onto the operating table! I think you can see that in one of the photos. Oh, and my back hurts now!!
